A VCD player or older computer may require MPEG-1 video arranged as a Video CD rather than a camcorder’s MOD recording. Converting the footage requires both transcoding the video and, for a physical disc, authoring a compliant VCD image.

What the MOD format is

In the Video category, MOD usually means an MPEG-2 program-stream recording produced by standard-definition tapeless camcorders such as JVC Everio, Panasonic, and some Canon models. These cameras commonly use .MOD for video and .MOI for recording metadata; the MOD file may play after being renamed to .MPG, but renaming does not convert its codec or resolution. MOD recordings are typically interlaced MPEG-2 video with MPEG audio and may use a camcorder-specific 4:3 or widescreen flag.

What the VCD format is

Video CD is a CD-based playback standard that uses MPEG-1 video and MPEG-1 Layer II audio. A compliant VCD normally uses 352×288 pixels at 25 fps for PAL or 352×240 pixels at approximately 29.97 fps for NTSC, with video near 1,150 kbit/s CBR and audio at 44.1 kHz, commonly 224 kbit/s. VCD is useful for older standalone CD/DVD players and systems that cannot decode MPEG-2, but its low resolution and bitrate produce noticeably less detail than the original camcorder recording.

How to actually convert MOD to VCD

For a free desktop conversion, use FFmpeg to transcode the MOD file to a VCD-compliant MPEG file, then use VCDImager to create the disc image. On 101convert.com, you can also convert the file online for free without installing software.

  1. Copy the original MOD file and confirm whether the recording uses PAL or NTSC. Use PAL for footage recorded at 25 fps and NTSC for footage recorded at approximately 29.97 or 30 fps.
  2. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the recording, and run the matching command:
    ffmpeg -i input.MOD -target pal-vcd output.mpg
    For NTSC, use:
    ffmpeg -i input.MOD -target ntsc-vcd output.mpg
  3. Play output.mpg to check the picture and sound. FFmpeg's VCD target sets the MPEG-1 video, 44.1 kHz audio, frame size, frame rate, and bitrate expected by VCD authoring tools.
  4. To create a disc image, install VCDImager and run:
    vcdimager -t vcd2 -c disc.cue -b disc.bin output.mpg
This produces disc.bin and disc.cue, which represent the VCD filesystem and MPEG track.
  5. Burn disc.cue to a blank CD-R with disc-burning software that supports CUE/BIN images. Do not burn output.mpg as an ordinary data file if the disc must work in a standalone VCD player.

Graphical applications that expose FFmpeg's VCD or MPEG-1 profile can replace the command line, but the output still needs VCD authoring before it is burned as a standards-based disc.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The conversion is lossy twice when the source is MPEG-2: decoding the MOD file and re-encoding it as MPEG-1. Keep the original MOD files for archiving, and use the VCD only as a compatibility copy. Interlaced source footage can show comb-like edges after conversion; deinterlace during transcoding if the playback device or encoder does not handle interlaced material correctly, for example with ffmpeg -i input.MOD -vf yadif -target pal-vcd output.mpg.

A file named output.mpg is not automatically a VCD. Standalone compatibility depends on the MPEG parameters, the VCD directory structure, the disc image, the burn mode, and the player's PAL or NTSC support. Long recordings may exceed the practical capacity of a 700 MB CD because VCD stores video at roughly 10 MB per minute.
