MOD recordings often come from older JVC, Panasonic, or Canon camcorders, while legacy players and editing applications may expect DivX video. Converting requires transcoding the MPEG-2 video into MPEG-4 Part 2, usually inside an AVI container; changing the filename extension is not sufficient.

What the MOD format is

In the Video category, MOD is a camcorder recording format rather than the music-tracker format with the same extension. JVC Everio and some Panasonic and Canon standard-definition camcorders use .MOD files for MPEG-2 program-stream video, commonly accompanied by .MOI metadata files.

MOD files are usually 4:3 or widescreen interlaced recordings copied from an SD card or camcorder. They can be opened by FFmpeg-based applications, VLC, MPEG Streamclip, and many video editors, although some software recognizes them more reliably after renaming a copy to .MPG or .MPEG.

What the DIVX format is

DivX normally refers to the DivX implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2 video. DivX-compatible files commonly use an AVI container with an .AVI or .DIVX extension and an MPEG-4 Part 2 video stream identified by the DX50 FourCC.

DivX provides smaller files than the original MPEG-2 recording at comparable viewing quality and was widely supported by older DVD players, media players, and televisions. Modern devices often support H.264 or H.265 in MP4 but do not support DivX, so the target device should be checked before conversion.

How to convert MOD to DIVX

FFmpeg is the most reliable desktop method because it reads camcorder MOD files directly and can create an AVI file with a DivX-compatible video stream.

  1. Install FFmpeg from a trusted desktop package and place the source file in an accessible folder.
  2. Open a terminal or command prompt in that folder.
  3. Run this command, replacing the filenames as necessary:
    ffmpeg -i input.MOD -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.avi
  4. Play output.avi on the target device and verify the picture, aspect ratio, audio, and seeking behavior.

The command uses FFmpeg's MPEG-4 Part 2 encoder, writes the DivX-compatible DX50 tag, encodes audio as MP3 for broad AVI-player compatibility, and uses constant-quality video encoding. Lower -q:v values generally produce higher quality and larger files; values around 3–5 are a practical starting range.

For conversion without installing software, upload the file to 101convert.com, choose DIVX or the available DivX-compatible AVI output, start the conversion, and download the result. The service may impose file-size, duration, or codec restrictions.

Quality and compatibility limitations

MOD already contains lossy MPEG-2 video, so transcoding to DivX cannot restore detail and may introduce additional blockiness or ringing. Keep the original MOD file for archiving and avoid repeated conversions.

Camcorder MOD files are often interlaced. Preserve interlacing when the output will be viewed on an interlaced television; for computer or progressive displays, deinterlace during conversion with a filter such as -vf yadif. Do not deinterlace automatically if preserving the original motion detail matters.

Some players require an .AVI extension rather than .DIVX, even when the video stream has the DX50 tag. If a device rejects the result, use AVI, MP3 audio, standard frame dimensions, and a moderate bitrate or quality setting; renaming the file alone will not change codec compatibility.
