JVC Everio and similar camcorders save standard-definition video as MOD, while some HDTV recorders and set-top boxes require TRP transport streams. Converting the file changes the container so the recording can be accepted by TRP-compatible playback or editing software.

What the MOD format is

In the Video category, MOD is a camcorder recording format rather than a codec. JVC Everio camcorders and some Panasonic and Canon models commonly create .MOD files containing MPEG-2 program-stream video with MPEG audio or AC-3 audio. The files are usually standard-definition recordings, often accompanied by .MOI metadata files that store recording dates and camera information.

MOD files can usually be opened by VLC, MPEG Streamclip, FFmpeg, and many video editors. Some applications identify the content more reliably after the extension is changed from .MOD to .MPG, but renaming only changes the filename; it does not create a TRP file.

What the TRP format is

TRP is generally an MPEG-2 transport-stream container used by HDTV receivers, personal video recorders, satellite or cable set-top boxes, and some television playback systems. A TRP file can carry video, audio, timestamps, and broadcast-style packetized data in a format suited to transmission and recorder storage.

TRP is useful when a target device specifically expects a transport stream rather than an MPEG program stream. Compatibility is device-specific: one recorder may expect MPEG-2 video and MP2 audio, while another may accept H.264 video with AAC or AC-3 audio inside the same container.

How to actually convert MOD to TRP

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option because it can either remux compatible streams without re-encoding or convert the streams to MPEG-TS-compatible codecs.

  1. Install FFmpeg and place the MOD file in a working folder.
  2. Inspect the streams with ffprobe input.MOD if the required TRP device has codec restrictions.
  3. Try a lossless container conversion first:
    ffmpeg -i input.MOD -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.trp
  4. Play output.trp and test it on the target device. If the device rejects the file or the source streams are incompatible, create an MPEG-2 transport stream by re-encoding:
    ffmpeg -i input.MOD -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp

The first command is faster and preserves the original audio and video quality, but it works only when the existing streams and metadata are accepted by the TRP reader. The second command is slower and loses some quality, but produces conventional MPEG-2 video and MP2 audio that suit many older broadcast-oriented devices.

For a no-installation conversion, 101convert.com can convert the file for free through its online converter. Upload the MOD file, choose TRP as the output, start the conversion, and download the resulting file after processing.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Changing MOD from an MPEG-2 program stream to TRP does not improve resolution or bitrate. Use stream copying whenever the destination accepts the source codecs; re-encoding introduces generation loss and can alter interlacing, aspect-ratio flags, timestamps, or audio synchronization.

Some camcorder MOD files use interlaced video and non-square pixels. Preserve the original display aspect ratio when re-encoding, and avoid deinterlacing unless the destination is progressive. A TRP extension alone does not guarantee compatibility because manufacturers may impose specific resolutions, codecs, audio formats, packet sizes, or transport-stream metadata.

Copy the original MOD and MOI files before conversion. The converted TRP normally contains the media streams but not the camcorder's proprietary recording-date and thumbnail metadata.
