What the MOD format is

In video workflows, .MOD is a camcorder recording format used mainly by JVC Everio and some Panasonic and Canon models. The file usually contains MPEG-2 video with MPEG-1 Layer II or Dolby Digital audio in a program-stream container. Camera software may also create companion .MOI files containing recording metadata.

Some MOD files are structurally similar to MPEG-2 files with a nonstandard extension. Renaming clip.MOD to clip.MPG can make it readable by certain editors, but it does not convert the video and does not produce FLV.

What the FLV format is

FLV is the Flash Video container historically used by Adobe Flash Player, older web video platforms, and legacy media applications. It can contain Sorenson Spark, VP6, or H.264 video and MP3, AAC, or other supported audio streams.

FLV was useful when a target player specifically required Flash Video or when a legacy publishing workflow expected an FLV file. Flash Player support ended in 2020, so MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is usually more compatible for current browsers, editing software, and mobile devices.

How to convert MOD to FLV

For a local conversion, FFmpeg handles MOD program streams directly and provides control over codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and bitrate. Install FFmpeg, place the source file in a working folder, and run:

ffmpeg -i "input.MOD" -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "output.flv"

This decodes the MPEG-2 source, encodes H.264 video, encodes AAC audio, and writes an FLV container. H.264/AAC is preferable to obsolete Sorenson or VP6 when the receiving application accepts modern FLV streams.

To preserve the original standard-definition dimensions while controlling video size, set a video bitrate such as 1,500 kbit/s:

For a batch conversion on Windows Command Prompt, use:

Quality and compatibility considerations

Because MOD camcorder video is commonly MPEG-2, conversion to H.264 involves lossy re-encoding. Keep the source resolution and frame rate unless the destination requires different values; upscaling cannot restore detail. Use a higher video bitrate for fast motion and a lower bitrate only when file size matters more than image quality.

Some older FLV players accept only MP3 audio or specific legacy video codecs. If H.264/AAC playback fails, try MP3 audio instead:

Check the output with ffprobe output.flv or a media player before deleting the original. MOD files can contain interlaced footage; if combing appears during playback, deinterlace during encoding with -vf yadif, for example:
