Some televisions, satellite receivers, and DVR software accept video only in an MPEG transport stream with a .trp extension. Converting HEVC usually requires both changing the container and transcoding the video to H.264 or MPEG-2, because many TRP devices cannot decode HEVC.
What the HEVC format is
HEVC, also called H.265, is a video compression standard designed to provide similar visual quality at roughly half the bitrate of H.264. Phones, action cameras, screen recorders, security cameras, Blu-ray workflows, OBS, FFmpeg, and current video editors commonly create HEVC video.
HEVC is normally stored inside containers such as MP4, MKV, or MOV. It can also exist as a raw elementary stream with a filename such as recording.hevc or recording.h265. The filename extension alone does not identify the audio format, frame rate, or metadata.
What the TRP format is
TRP is commonly an MPEG transport stream used by set-top boxes, satellite receivers, digital video recorders, and some televisions. A TRP file can contain one or more packetized video and audio streams, program information, timestamps, and error-resilient transport data.
The .trp extension does not guarantee one fixed codec. Devices may expect H.264 video with AC-3 or AAC audio, or MPEG-2 video with MPEG audio. TRP is therefore a target container and device-specific recording convention, not a single compression standard.
How to actually convert HEVC to TRP
FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a current FFmpeg build, then inspect the source before choosing codecs:
ffprobe input.hevc
For an HEVC source without audio, create a broadly compatible H.264 transport stream:
ffmpeg -i input.hevc -map 0:v:0 -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -f mpegts output.trp
For an MP4, MKV, or MOV containing HEVC and audio, transcode the video and encode audio as AC-3:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp
If the target receiver specifically requires MPEG-2 video and MPEG audio, use the device's documented profile instead:
ffmpeg -i input.hevc -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp
When the target supports HEVC inside an MPEG transport stream, remuxing avoids video quality loss and is faster:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.trp
That last command changes the container but does not make HEVC compatible with a device that expects H.264 or MPEG-2. Test the resulting file on the target hardware and check its manual for maximum resolution, frame rate, level, audio codec, and bitrate.
For a no-installation workflow, the free converter on 101convert.com can process the file online. Uploading may be unsuitable for confidential recordings or very large videos because the source must leave the local computer.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Transcoding from HEVC to H.264 or MPEG-2 decodes and re-encodes every frame, so some quality loss is unavoidable. Lower CRF values improve quality and increase file size; -crf 18 to -crf 23 is a practical H.264 range, while the receiver's bitrate limit may matter more than the CRF setting.
Changing .hevc to .trp in a file manager does not convert the stream. MPEG transport streams can also contain multiple programs, but simple device playback often works best with one video stream and one supported audio stream.
