ASF is required by some older Windows-based media systems, broadcast workflows, and legacy playback software that do not accept HEVC containers such as MP4 or MKV. Converting usually requires transcoding HEVC video to a codec with better ASF compatibility, such as WMV2, rather than simply changing the filename extension.

What the HEVC format is

HEVC, also called H.265, is a video compression standard designed to deliver similar image quality at lower bitrates than H.264. Phones, action cameras, screen-recording tools, Blu-ray workflows, and modern video editors commonly create HEVC video, usually inside .mp4, .mov, or .mkv containers; a raw HEVC elementary stream may use the .hevc extension.

HEVC reduces file size efficiently but requires newer decoding hardware or software. Older Windows Media applications and ASF-focused devices may not recognize HEVC even when the file is placed in an ASF container.

What the ASF format is

ASF, or Advanced Systems Format, is a Microsoft container intended for streamed and synchronized audio-video data. It commonly uses the .asf extension and is also associated with Windows Media files using .wmv video or .wma audio.

ASF stores timestamps, metadata, packetized media, and error-resilient streaming information. Its strongest compatibility is with Windows Media codecs such as WMV2 or WMV3 for video and WMA for audio. ASF is a poor choice when modern HEVC playback, broad device support, or editing-system compatibility is required.

How to convert HEVC to ASF

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable for files containing HEVC in MP4, MOV, or MKV containers and can transcode them into an ASF file with Windows Media-compatible codecs.

  1. Install FFmpeg and confirm that the ffmpeg command is available.
  2. Run this command, replacing input.mp4 with the source filename:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v wmv2 -b:v 3000k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k output.asf

-c:v wmv2 transcodes the HEVC video to WMV2, while -b:v 3000k sets its video bitrate. -c:a wmav2 and -b:a 128k encode the audio in a codec commonly supported by ASF software.

For a raw HEVC stream, use a command such as:

ffmpeg -f hevc -i input.hevc -c:v wmv2 -b:v 3000k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k output.asf

A raw video stream contains no audio, so FFmpeg will create an ASF file with video only unless an additional audio input is supplied.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the HEVC-containing video, select ASF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes. The service may transcode the video when direct HEVC-to-ASF stream copying is incompatible.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Transcoding from HEVC to WMV2 causes generational quality loss because the video is decoded and compressed again. Increase the video bitrate for better quality, but expect a larger ASF file; a value around 3000k suits many standard-definition or modest-resolution sources, while HD footage may need substantially more.

Do not assume that changing .mp4 or .hevc to .asf performs a conversion. Renaming changes only the extension and leaves the HEVC bitstream unchanged.

Some modern FFmpeg builds or specialized players may be able to place HEVC in ASF with -c:v copy, for example ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy output.asf, but many ASF readers reject that result. WMV2/WMA transcoding is the safer option for legacy Windows Media compatibility. Check the converted file on the target device because ASF codec support varies by application and firmware.
