Older DVRs, satellite receivers, and set-top boxes may require recordings in the .trp transport-stream format instead of HEVC files. Converting the video can make it readable by that hardware, but the correct method depends on whether the device accepts HEVC inside a TRP container or requires MPEG-2 video.
What the H265 format is
H.265, also called HEVC, is a video codec rather than a complete container format. It compresses video more efficiently than H.264, so phones, 4K cameras, surveillance systems, screen recorders, FFmpeg, HandBrake, and editing applications commonly produce it.
A file ending in .h265 or .hevc is often a raw HEVC elementary stream with no container metadata. HEVC can also be stored inside .mp4, .mkv, or transport-stream files. Raw streams usually contain video only; audio, subtitles, duration, and seeking information may be absent.
What the TRP format is
In the Video category, TRP generally means an MPEG transport stream saved with a .trp extension. DVRs, digital television receivers, and some set-top boxes use it for recorded broadcasts. The stream can carry video, audio, program tables, and timing packets in a form designed for broadcast delivery and error-prone transmission.
TRP is a container, not a single mandatory video codec. Some equipment accepts H.264 or HEVC in an MPEG transport stream, while older equipment expects MPEG-2 video with MPEG-1 Layer II or AC-3 audio. The extension alone does not identify the codec or guarantee compatibility.
How to convert H265 to TRP
For a free desktop conversion, FFmpeg provides the necessary demuxers, codecs, and MPEG-TS muxer. If installation is not appropriate, the built-in converter on 101convert.com can convert the file online for free without installing software.
Convert a raw HEVC stream for older hardware
This command decodes HEVC and creates an MPEG-2 video transport stream, which is the most broadly compatible interpretation of TRP:
ffmpeg -f hevc -i input.h265 -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 6M -an -f mpegts output.trp
-f hevc tells FFmpeg that the input is a raw H.265 stream. -c:v mpeg2video performs a lossy codec conversion; -b:v 6M sets the video bitrate; -an omits audio because a raw H.265 file normally has none; and -f mpegts explicitly selects the transport-stream container.
Convert a container containing HEVC and audio
When the source is an MP4 or MKV containing audio, use the container filename and encode both streams:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 6M -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp
The optional audio map prevents failure when the source has no audio. Adjust 6M to match the recorder's specification; 4–8 Mb/s is common for standard-definition or modest high-definition MPEG-2 recordings, but the receiving device may require a specific value.
Remux without re-encoding when the device supports HEVC
If the target device accepts HEVC in an MPEG transport stream, avoid quality loss and reduce processing time by copying the streams:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.trp
This changes the container only. It will not make an HEVC stream compatible with hardware that supports only MPEG-2 or H.264.
Compatibility and quality limitations
Re-encoding HEVC to MPEG-2 reduces compression efficiency, so the resulting TRP is usually much larger and may look worse at the same bitrate. Remuxing with -c copy preserves the original video quality but retains the original codec and may fail on older receivers.
Proprietary DVRs can impose requirements beyond the filename, including fixed resolution, frame rate, video profile, audio codec, transport-stream packet structure, service identifiers, or specific metadata. Check the device manual before choosing codecs. Use ffprobe input.h265 or ffprobe input.mkv to inspect the source streams, and test a short output file before converting a complete recording.
