What the H265 format is

H.265, also called HEVC, is a video codec rather than a container. It compresses video more efficiently than H.264, so phones, 4K cameras, CCTV systems, screen recorders, and streaming tools can store high-resolution footage in smaller files.

HEVC video commonly appears inside .mp4, .mkv, or .mov files. Recent smartphones and action cameras may record it by default; OBS Studio, HandBrake, FFmpeg, and many camera utilities can also create HEVC files. The filename extension alone does not identify the codec, so inspect the file with MediaInfo or FFmpeg when compatibility is uncertain.

What the WMV format is

WMV refers to Microsoft Windows Media Video codecs, usually stored in an ASF-based file with a .wmv extension. WMV files are supported by Windows Media Player and many older Windows applications, presentation systems, and editing programs.

WMV can be useful when a legacy Windows workflow specifically requires it or when a device lists WMV among its supported formats. It is not normally a quality or size improvement over H.265: HEVC generally delivers comparable quality at a lower bitrate, while WMV offers broader compatibility with older software.

How to convert H265 to WMV

Convert online without installing software

3. Choose WMV as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .wmv file and test it in the target program.

Convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg gives direct control over the output codec, bitrate, resolution, and audio. A broadly compatible WMV-style conversion is:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v wmv2 -b:v 5M -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k output.wmv

Replace input.mp4 with the source filename. Set -b:v 5M to a lower value for a smaller file or a higher value for better detail; 5 Mbps is a starting point for 1080p footage, not a universal optimum. For a source with no audio, omit the audio options:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v wmv2 -b:v 5M -an output.wmv

To preserve the source dimensions and frame rate, do not add scaling or frame-rate options. To create a 720p file, for example, add -vf scale=-2:720:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf scale=-2:720 -c:v wmv2 -b:v 3M -c:a wmav2 -b:a 160k output.wmv

Convert with a desktop application

VLC can perform the conversion without command-line tools. Open Media → Convert/Save, add the H.265 file, select Convert/Save, choose or create a WMV profile, select a destination ending in .wmv, and start the job. Verify that the profile uses a WMV-compatible video codec and audio codec rather than merely changing the filename extension.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion from H.265 to WMV requires decoding and re-encoding because the codecs are different. The WMV output cannot be losslessly copied from the HEVC stream, and repeated conversions can add visible artifacts. Keep the original H.265 file as the archival master.

A WMV extension does not guarantee compatibility: applications may support only particular WMV generations, resolutions, audio codecs, or frame rates. If an older program rejects the output, try WMV2 video with WMAV2 audio, constant frame rate, standard 8-bit color, and a moderate resolution such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720. Changing the extension alone does not convert the video.
