How to convert divx to wmv file

A Windows application, older media player, editing workflow, or device may accept WMV but fail to decode DivX video. Converting can also make a legacy file easier to share in a Windows Media workflow, but it cannot restore detail lost in the original encoding.

What the DIVX format is

DivX is primarily a video codec based on MPEG-4 Part 2, not a complete container format. DivX video is commonly stored in an .avi file with MPEG-4 video and MP3 audio, although the filename extension does not identify the codecs inside the file. Older DVD-ripping tools, DivX encoders, downloaded clips, and standalone DivX-certified players commonly produced these files.

VLC, MPC-HC, and FFmpeg can usually decode DivX without a separate DivX installation. If a file does not open, inspect its streams rather than assuming that changing the extension will convert it; renaming .avi to .wmv does not change the video or audio codecs.

What the WMV format is

WMV refers to Microsoft Windows Media Video codecs, usually stored in an ASF-based container with a .wmv extension. WMV files may use WMV7, WMV8, or WMV9 video and commonly contain WMA audio, so the .wmv extension does not specify one exact codec profile.

WMV is useful when a Windows program, older media device, presentation workflow, or publishing system specifically requires Windows Media files. It can produce smaller files than uncompressed video, but modern software and devices generally support H.264 and H.265 more widely than WMV.

FFmpeg does not overwrite an existing output by default; add -y before the output filename only when overwriting is intentional.

The command preserves the source dimensions and frame rate because it does not specify scaling or frame-rate conversion. To resize a widescreen source to 1280 pixels wide while preserving its aspect ratio, use:

ffmpeg -i input.avi -vf scale=1280:-2 -c:v wmv2 -b:v 1800k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k output.wmv

VLC can also convert through Media → Convert/Save: add the source, select Convert/Save, choose or create a profile using WMV video, WMA audio, and ASF/WMV encapsulation, set a destination ending in .wmv, and select Start. Available profiles and WMV encoders vary by VLC build, so verify the output rather than relying on the extension.

Quality and compatibility limits

This conversion is a lossy re-encode. WMV cannot recover detail already discarded by the DivX source, and a second lossy encode can add blocking, blur, or ringing. Keep the original dimensions, frame rate, aspect ratio, and a comparable or higher video bitrate unless the target device requires different values.

Older devices may accept only specific WMV versions, resolutions, frame rates, audio sample rates, or WMV9 profiles. If the device rejects the file, inspect it with ffprobe output.wmv and encode to the device's documented profile. Interlaced source video should retain interlacing for an interlaced target; for progressive playback, deinterlace during conversion with -vf yadif rather than treating interlaced frames as progressive.
