Programs and older VCD players expect video in the MPEG-1 stream used by Video CD, commonly stored with a .dat extension. Converting a DivX video therefore usually means transcoding it to VCD-compliant MPEG-1 video and then using the resulting stream as a DAT file.

What the DIVX format is

DivX is a video codec and, in some cases, a media-container format based on AVI. Files commonly appear as .divx or .avi and contain MPEG-4 Part 2 video compressed with DivX, often with MP3 audio. DivX files were created by DivX encoders and older video-authoring or media-conversion programs, and they are frequently found in archived downloads, optical-disc collections, and older Windows media libraries.

The extension alone does not identify every stream detail. Use ffprobe input.divx or a media player such as VLC to check the video codec, frame rate, dimensions, and audio format before converting.

What the DAT format is

In the Video category, DAT normally means the MPEG-1 Program Stream used by Video CD. A VCD stores its movie under a path such as MPEGAV/AVSEQ01.DAT; the file contains MPEG-1 video and MPEG-1 Layer II audio rather than a special codec unique to the DAT extension.

DAT is useful when a VCD player, older DVD player, set-top device, or VCD-authoring application requires that structure. Standard VCD video uses 352×288 pixels at 25 fps for PAL or 352×240 pixels at approximately 29.97 fps for NTSC, with about 1,150 kbit/s MPEG-1 video and 224 kbit/s, 44.1 kHz audio. The format has broad support on legacy hardware but produces larger files and lower quality than modern H.264 or H.265 at the same visual quality.

How to actually convert DIVX to DAT

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop tool because it can decode common DivX streams and encode the VCD-compatible MPEG-1 output.

  1. Install FFmpeg from your operating system’s package manager or the official FFmpeg distribution, then place the source file in an accessible folder.
  2. For a PAL source or PAL playback device, run ffmpeg -i input.divx -target pal-vcd output.mpg.
  3. For an NTSC source or NTSC playback device, run ffmpeg -i input.divx -target ntsc-vcd output.mpg.
  4. Check output.mpg in VLC or another MPEG-1-compatible player. If the target application specifically requires the DAT extension, rename or copy it as AVSEQ01.DAT; changing the extension does not alter the encoded data.

On Windows, renaming can be done with ren output.mpg AVSEQ01.DAT. On macOS or Linux, use mv output.mpg AVSEQ01.DAT. Keep the original MPEG stream if another application accepts .mpg, because the contents are generally more informative than the filename extension.

A VCD player normally requires more than a renamed file. To create a playable disc, import the MPEG-1 output into a VCD-authoring program, select the correct PAL or NTSC standard, and burn the generated disc image. Simply copying AVSEQ01.DAT to a data CD will not create the required VCD directory and disc structure.

If installing software is undesirable, 101convert.com can convert the file online for free without installing software; verify that its output is MPEG-1 VCD-compatible before renaming it to DAT or authoring a disc.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Transcoding from DivX to MPEG-1 is lossy, so the DAT cannot retain detail already discarded by the DivX encode. Avoid enlarging the source beyond VCD resolution, and choose PAL or NTSC according to the playback device rather than the filename.

For reliable VCD compatibility, use a source with a matching frame-rate family when possible. Converting 23.976 or 25 fps material to an NTSC or PAL target can introduce duplicated or dropped frames. FFmpeg’s -target preset handles the required stream parameters, but it does not guarantee that every damaged, variable-frame-rate, or unusual DivX file will convert without correction.
