A VCD conversion is needed when a video must play in an older standalone VCD/DVD player or be burned as a Video CD. DivX files commonly use modern AVI-based encoding that those players cannot read directly.

What the DIVX format is

DivX is a video codec and file type commonly found in .avi files, using MPEG-4 Part 2 compression. It was widely created by DivX Codec, VirtualDub, AutoGK, and older DVD-ripping or video-conversion software. DivX files are common in archived downloads, older camera or editing collections, and media libraries from the 2000s.

What the VCD format is

Video CD is a disc format designed for standalone VCD and many early DVD players. A compliant VCD uses MPEG-1 video at 352×288 pixels for PAL or 352×240 pixels for NTSC, approximately 1,150 kbit/s video, MPEG-1 Layer II audio at 44.1 kHz, and usually 224 kbit/s audio. The finished disc contains files such as AVSEQ01.DAT inside the MPEGAV directory; copying an MPEG file to a data CD does not create a VCD.

VCD supports inexpensive CD media and broad compatibility with older hardware, but its picture quality is substantially below DVD and modern digital video. A standard 74-minute CD holds about 74 minutes of VCD video because the format uses a fixed bitrate.

How to actually convert DIVX to VCD

Using FFmpeg and VCD authoring tools

  1. Install FFmpeg and confirm that the source is readable with ffprobe input.divx. If the file uses a different extension, replace input.divx with its actual filename.
  2. Choose PAL or NTSC to match the player and television standard. For PAL, encode the video with: ffmpeg -i input.divx -target pal-vcd output.mpg For NTSC, use: ffmpeg -i input.divx -target ntsc-vcd output.mpg FFmpeg's VCD targets set the required MPEG-1 video, 44.1 kHz audio, bitrate, frame size, and related parameters.
  3. Author the compliant MPEG file as a VCD image with VCDImager: vcdimager -t vcd2 -c disc.cue -b disc.bin output.mpg Use -t vcd1 instead if the target player requires the older VCD 1.1 specification.
  4. Burn the resulting cue/bin image as an image, not as ordinary files. With CDRDAO, use: cdrdao write disc.cue Use a blank CD-R and finalize the disc so standalone players can recognize it.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Select DIVX as the source and VCD as the target, upload the video, start the conversion, and download the result. If the service produces only an MPEG file rather than a disc image, author and burn that file as a VCD; an MPEG file alone is not a playable Video CD.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion cannot restore detail discarded by DivX compression, and reducing a high-resolution source to 352-pixel-wide VCD video introduces blur and block artifacts. Select PAL or NTSC according to the playback equipment; converting between 23.976, 25, and 29.97 frames per second can cause duplicated frames, dropped frames, or audio-sync changes.

A VCD normally stores about 74 or 80 minutes per CD-R. Longer videos must be split across discs or encoded outside the VCD specification, which reduces compatibility. Test the authored image with a media player or VCD-capable hardware before making multiple discs.
