What WMV means
WMV (Windows Media Video) is a family of video codecs and file formats developed by Microsoft. WMV files commonly come from Windows applications, older camcorders, Microsoft media libraries, and older streaming or download systems. A WMV file may contain different Windows Media video and audio codecs, so its extension alone does not identify the exact encoding settings.
What DivX means
DivX is a branded implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2 video compression, not a container by itself. DivX video is commonly stored in an .avi file with MP3 or AC-3 audio; some DivX software also uses the .divx extension and DivX Media Format features. MPEG-4 Part 2 can provide smaller files than uncompressed or lightly compressed video while retaining acceptable quality, and it is supported by many older standalone players and televisions.

Some hardware requires a specific resolution, frame rate, audio codec, or maximum bitrate. A desktop GUI that exposes the same MPEG-4 Part 2, AVI, FourCC, and audio controls can be used instead, but selecting an output named only “AVI” does not guarantee DivX encoding.
Quality and compatibility limits
- Re-encoding is lossy. It cannot restore detail already removed from the WMV source, and converting to a lower bitrate can introduce blocking, ringing, or blurred motion.
- Keep the source resolution and frame rate unless the target device requires different values. Avoid enlarging a low-resolution WMV.
- DivX compatibility is not universal: newer players may omit MPEG-4 Part 2 support, while older devices may reject an AVI with unsupported audio, variable frame rate, high resolution, or unusual interleaving.
- WMV files protected with Microsoft digital rights management may not be convertible after licensing restrictions are applied; an ordinary unprotected WMV is required.
