Some older Windows programs, media players, and editing systems accept WMV more reliably than HD DVD-derived EVO video. Converting is also useful when an EVO recording must be shared, archived, or reduced to a format supported by standard Windows software.
What the EVO format is
In the Video category, EVO is the file extension used for Enhanced VOB files from HD DVD video discs. An EVO file is a program-stream container that can hold MPEG-2, VC-1, or H.264 video, plus Dolby Digital, DTS, or other audio streams. Commercial HD DVD content may be split across several sequential files and protected with AACS encryption.
You typically encounter EVO files inside an HD DVD disc structure, often in an HVDVD_TS folder, rather than as ordinary camera recordings. Some authoring, archival, and disc-extraction software creates or preserves them.
What the WMV format is
WMV commonly refers to Microsoft Windows Media Video, usually stored in an ASF container with a .wmv extension. WMV is supported by many Windows applications, older media players, presentation tools, and editing programs. WMV9/VC-1 can provide smaller files than uncompressed or lightly compressed video, while WMA audio is commonly used alongside it.
WMV is appropriate when the target application specifically requires Windows Media codecs or when compatibility with older Windows hardware matters. It is not normally the best archival format because modern players and editors more consistently support H.264 in MP4.
How to convert EVO to WMV
Using FFmpeg on an unencrypted EVO file
- Install FFmpeg from a trusted desktop package and place the source file in an easy-to-access folder.
- Open a terminal or Command Prompt in that folder.
- Run this command, replacing the filenames as needed:
ffmpeg -i "input.evo" -c:v wmv2 -b:v 4000k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k -ar 48000 "output.wmv"
wmv2 produces Windows Media Video 8-compatible video, while wmav2 produces WMA audio. Adjust -b:v 4000k to about 2500k–6000k for standard-definition material; higher values preserve more detail but increase the file size.
To preserve the source dimensions and frame rate, FFmpeg uses them automatically. To force a smaller 1280-pixel-wide output while maintaining the aspect ratio, add -vf "scale=1280:-2" before the output filename.
When the EVO comes from protected HD DVD media
FFmpeg does not decrypt AACS-protected HD DVD content. Use software that you are legally entitled to use for reading the disc, such as MakeMKV where it supports the source, and export an unencrypted title to .mkv; then convert that file with FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i "title.mkv" -c:v wmv2 -b:v 4000k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k "output.wmv"
If the video is divided into sequential EVO files, select the complete title rather than converting an arbitrary segment. Converting each segment separately can create missing scenes, discontinuities, or repeated introductory material.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the EVO file, choose WMV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Large HD DVD files may exceed browser upload limits or take considerable time to process; do not upload protected or confidential video unless the service's handling terms are acceptable.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Conversion cannot restore detail already lost in the EVO source. Re-encoding MPEG-2 or VC-1 video to WMV introduces another generation of compression, so use a sufficiently high video bitrate and avoid repeated conversions.
Some WMV-capable applications accept only particular codecs, resolutions, or audio formats. If the first output is rejected, try Windows Media Video 9 with a compatible encoder, stereo WMA audio at 128–192 kbps, and a constant frame rate. FFmpeg's wmv2 encoder does not create every proprietary WMV9 profile, so applications requiring a specific WMV9 or VC-1 variant may need Microsoft's legacy Windows Media Encoder or another encoder that exposes that profile.
