What the EVO format is

EVO is the HD DVD video object container, normally using the .evo extension. It stores HD DVD program content, including MPEG-2 video, audio tracks, subtitles, navigation-related data, and sometimes menu or title information.

You usually encounter EVO files in copied or authored HD DVD content, often inside an HVDVD_TS folder. HD DVD authoring software and disc-production tools create the format; ordinary camera and phone applications generally do not.

An EVO file may be protected by disc encryption or may depend on HD DVD playlist and navigation data. A converter can process it only when the file is readable and contains an accessible video title.

What the MPG format is

MPG is a common extension for MPEG program streams, usually containing MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video with MPEG audio. The format is supported by many desktop players, televisions, editing applications, and older authoring tools.

MPG is useful when you need a single playable video file rather than an HD DVD title structure. MPEG-2 encoding also avoids some compatibility problems caused by newer codecs, although it produces larger files than H.264 or H.265 at comparable quality.

How to convert EVO to MPG

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a current FFmpeg build, place the readable EVO file in a working folder, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpeg output.mpg

This command selects the first video stream and any available audio streams, encodes video as MPEG-2, encodes audio as MPEG-1 Layer II, and writes an MPEG program stream. Replace input.evo and output.mpg with the actual filenames.

If the EVO already contains MPEG-2 video and its audio is accepted by your target player, try stream copying to avoid re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpeg output.mpg

Stream copying is faster and preserves the encoded quality, but it can fail when the source streams or their parameters are not valid for the MPEG program stream container. Use the re-encoding command when the copied file has no sound, fails to open, or is incompatible with the intended device.

Using the online converter

Quality and compatibility limits

Re-encoding MPEG-2 video causes generation loss. Use -q:v 2 or -q:v 3 for high quality; larger values reduce bitrate and quality. MPG files may be considerably larger than the source when the EVO uses efficient compression.

HD DVD video can use high-definition frame sizes that some older MPG players and editors cannot handle. If the target device requires standard-definition DVD video, use a suitable preset such as:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -target ntsc-dvd output.mpg

For PAL DVD compatibility, use -target pal-dvd instead. These presets resize or re-encode the video and therefore do not preserve the original HD resolution.

If FFmpeg reports encryption, missing playlists, or unsupported navigation data, first obtain an unencrypted, legally accessible title stream. Renaming .evo to .mpg does not convert the container and will not resolve encryption or codec incompatibility.
