What the EVO format is
EVO is an HD DVD video container used for titles stored in an HVDVD_TS directory, commonly with names such as FEATURE.EVO or VTS_01_1.EVO. It normally contains MPEG-2 video with AC-3, E-AC-3, or DTS audio, plus DVD-style navigation and subtitle data. HD DVD authoring software and disc-copying workflows create EVO files; they are usually encountered on archived HD DVD media or disc backups rather than as camera recordings.
A commercial HD DVD may contain AACS encryption. A converter generally cannot process an encrypted EVO directly; it needs an unencrypted file, and copying or decrypting commercial media must comply with applicable law.
What the Xvid format is
Xvid is an MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile video codec, not a container. Xvid video is commonly stored in an AVI file, so an EVO conversion normally produces an .avi file containing Xvid video and MP3 audio.
Xvid is useful for older televisions, standalone DVD/DivX players, legacy editing applications, and systems that do not support H.264 or newer codecs. It offers smaller files than MPEG-2 at comparable visual quality, but modern H.264 or H.265 encoding usually provides better compression and device support.
How to actually convert EVO to Xvid
Using the built-in online converter
- Open the EVO-to-XVID converter on 101convert.com; the service is available free without installing software.
- Upload the unencrypted
.evofile. - Choose Xvid as the video format, and select AVI if the site exposes a container option.
- Start the conversion and download the resulting
.avifile after processing.
Do not upload copyrighted or sensitive video unless you have permission to transfer it and accept the service's file-handling terms. Large HD DVD files may exceed an online converter's upload or processing limits.
Using FFmpeg on a computer
An FFmpeg build with the libxvid encoder can convert an unencrypted EVO directly:
ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -vtag XVID -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.avi
Here, -q:v 4 selects quality-based Xvid encoding; lower values produce larger, better-quality files. Use a value around 5–7 for a smaller file, then inspect the result on the target device. -map 0:a? includes available audio streams without failing when the EVO has no audio.
If FFmpeg reports that libxvid is unavailable, install an FFmpeg build compiled with that library. The fallback below uses FFmpeg's MPEG-4 Part 2 encoder and adds an Xvid-compatible AVI tag, but it is not encoded by the Xvid library:
ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v mpeg4 -vtag XVID -q:v 4 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.avi
For interlaced EVO sources, keep the original interlacing for a compatible interlaced display, or deinterlace during conversion with -vf yadif. For example:
ffmpeg -i input.evo -vf yadif -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -vtag XVID -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.avi
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- Conversion is lossy twice: the EVO usually contains already-compressed MPEG-2, and Xvid recompresses it. Keep the original EVO as the archive master.
- AVI has limited support for HD DVD features. Menus, chapters, disc navigation, HD DVD subtitles, and some secondary audio streams may be lost; select and convert those streams separately if required.
- Older Xvid players commonly expect AVI, MPEG-4 Part 2, MP3 audio, and 4:3 or 16:9 video flagged correctly. Unusual resolutions, high frame rates, AC-3 audio, or HD dimensions can fail on such devices.
- Test the output on the intended player. If it rejects the file, use a standard AVI-compatible resolution, MP3 audio, and a moderate Xvid quality value rather than changing only the filename extension.
