Older DVD recorders and camcorders save MPEG-2 video in VRO files, while many older players and editing applications expect Xvid video, usually inside an AVI file. Converting it makes recorded footage easier to share, edit, and store in a smaller file.
What the VRO format is
VRO is the video recording format used by DVD-VR discs created by standalone DVD recorders, DVD camcorders, and some television recording devices. A file such as VIDEO_RM.VRO contains MPEG-2 video and audio, often with several recordings or titles addressed through DVD-VR navigation data.
VRO files are commonly found after copying the VIDEO_RM directory from a finalized or rewritable DVD. Some programs can open the MPEG-2 streams directly, but others expect an ordinary MPEG or AVI file and may not interpret the DVD-VR structure correctly.
What the Xvid format is
Xvid is an MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec, not a container format. Xvid video is most often stored in an .avi file with MP3 audio, although other containers are technically possible.
Xvid is useful for compatibility with older media players, televisions, editing programs, and hardware DVD players that support MPEG-4 ASP. It normally produces a smaller file than the original DVD-quality MPEG-2 video, but newer codecs such as H.264 and H.265 generally provide better quality at the same size.
How to actually convert VRO to Xvid
For a direct desktop conversion, FFmpeg can read the MPEG-2 stream in most VRO files and encode Xvid into an AVI container.
- Copy the VRO file from the DVD to a local drive. Use a short filename such as
input.VRO. - Check the available streams with
ffprobe input.VRO. If the file contains multiple recordings, identify the required video and audio stream or title first. - Run this command for an interlaced DVD recording:
ffmpeg -i input.VRO -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -vf yadif -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.avi - Use
output.aviin the target program. The file contains Xvid video and MP3 audio.
yadif deinterlaces common interlaced DVD footage. Omit -vf yadif when the source is already progressive. Lower values for -q:v generally increase Xvid quality and file size; values around 3–5 are a practical starting range.
If FFmpeg reports that libxvid is unavailable, install an FFmpeg build compiled with Xvid support or use a desktop encoder that exposes an Xvid/AVI output option. You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software, if the service accepts the VRO file and provides Xvid output.
Quality and compatibility limitations
VRO recordings are usually standard-definition MPEG-2 at DVD dimensions such as 720×480 or 720×576. Encoding them to a larger resolution does not restore detail. Keep the original VRO file as an archive because Xvid conversion is lossy.
DVD-VR navigation, menus, chapter marks, subtitles, and unused recordings are not reliably preserved by a direct stream conversion. If one VRO contains several titles, select the correct stream with -map or extract the desired title with DVD-VR-aware software before encoding.
Some older players require AVI with MP3 audio, a specific pixel format, or a restricted frame rate. If playback fails, use standard DVD dimensions, MP3 audio at 128–192 kbps, and avoid unusual subtitles or multiple audio streams.
