A DVD recorder may leave recordings in VRO format, while older DVD players and authoring software may require Video CD format. Converting the recording creates VCD-compliant MPEG-1 video, and authoring it produces the disc structure needed for playback in a VCD-compatible player.
What the VRO format is
VRO is the MPEG-2-based recording format used by DVD recorders operating in DVD-VR mode. Recordings are commonly stored as VR_MOVIE.VRO on DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, or DVD-R media. Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, and other standalone DVD recorders created these files; older DVD-VR editing applications may also open them.
A VRO file can contain DVD-VR navigation information, multiple recordings, and recorder-specific playlists in addition to the MPEG-2 audio and video streams. Copy the file from the disc to a local drive before converting it. The file may be playable in VLC or FFmpeg even when its filename does not end in .mpg.
What the VCD format is
Video CD uses an MPEG-1 system stream designed for CD-ROM playback. A standard VCD uses 352×288 pixels at 25 fps for PAL or 352×240 pixels at approximately 29.97 fps for NTSC, with MPEG-1 video at about 1,150 kbit/s and MPEG Layer II audio at 224 kbit/s, 44.1 kHz.
The converted MPEG file is not yet a complete VCD. A physical VCD stores the video in a disc structure such as MPEGAV/AVSEQ01.DAT. VCD is useful when compatibility with older standalone CD/DVD players matters, but it has substantially lower resolution and capacity than DVD or modern video formats.
How to convert VRO to VCD
Using FFmpeg
- Copy
VR_MOVIE.VROfrom the DVD to a writable folder. Do not edit the original disc. - Install FFmpeg and open a terminal in that folder.
- For a PAL recording, run:
ffmpeg -i VR_MOVIE.VRO -target pal-vcd converted.mpg - For an NTSC recording, run:
ffmpeg -i VR_MOVIE.VRO -target ntsc-vcd converted.mpg - Test
converted.mpgin a media player. FFmpeg's VCD target sets the MPEG-1 video, frame size, frame rate, audio format, and approximate VCD bit rates.
If the source contains several DVD-VR recordings, select the required title or playlist in a DVD-VR-capable video editor first. A direct FFmpeg conversion may process only the first detected program or follow the file's stream order rather than the recorder's visible playlist.
Creating a physical VCD
Use VCD authoring software after conversion. VCDImager can create a disc image from a compliant MPEG file:
vcdimager -t vcd2 -c converted.cue -b converted.bin converted.mpg
Burn the resulting converted.cue image with CD-burning software that supports cue/bin images and select a CD-R rather than a data-disc project. A data CD containing converted.mpg will not normally play as a VCD.
Using the built-in online converter
You can use the free VRO-to-VCD converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the VRO file, choose VCD as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. If you need a physical VCD, author and burn the downloaded MPEG output separately.
Quality and compatibility limits
Conversion cannot restore detail lost when the original recording was made. VRO recordings are usually interlaced MPEG-2, so fast motion may show combing after conversion; an editor with deinterlacing can improve progressive playback before VCD encoding, at the cost of additional processing.
Choose PAL or NTSC to match the source and target player. A PAL-to-NTSC or NTSC-to-PAL conversion changes frame rate and may introduce duplicated or blended frames. VCD also has a practical capacity of about 74 minutes on a 650 MB disc or 80 minutes on a 700 MB disc; longer recordings must be split or encoded outside the standard VCD specification.
