VRO files usually come from DVD recorders and DVD-RAM/RW camcorders, while DIVX is useful for playback on DivX-compatible devices and older media players. Converting is also practical when MPEG-2 VRO recordings are too large for sharing or need to be imported into software that accepts DivX video in an AVI-style file.

What the VRO format is

VRO is the video container used by the DVD-VR recording format. DVD recorders from Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer, Toshiba, and similar manufacturers commonly save recordings as VR_MOVIE.VRO on DVD-RAM or DVD-RW media.

The file normally contains MPEG-2 video with MPEG audio or AC-3 audio. A single VRO file can contain several recorded programs, plus DVD-VR navigation and edit information. VLC, MPC-HC, FFmpeg, and some DVD-authoring applications can read the video stream, but ordinary players may not display the recorder’s chapter or title structure.

What the DIVX format is

DivX video is generally MPEG-4 Part 2 video encoded with the DivX codec and stored in an AVI-compatible container. Files may use .divx or .avi, depending on the target player and authoring software.

Compared with DVD MPEG-2, DivX usually produces a smaller file at comparable viewing quality. It is suitable for older televisions, DVD players, set-top boxes, and media applications that explicitly support DivX or the DX50 codec tag. It is not the same as modern MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 or HEVC, which many newer devices support but older DivX hardware may not.

How to convert VRO to DIVX

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop method. Copy the VRO file from the disc to a local drive first, then inspect its streams:

ffprobe input.vro

Convert the first video and audio streams to DivX-compatible MPEG-4 video and MP3 audio:

ffmpeg -i input.vro -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k -ar 48000 -f avi output.divx

-q:v 4 requests relatively high visual quality; use a larger value such as 6 or 7 for a smaller file, or a smaller value for higher quality. The DX50 tag improves recognition by hardware players. If the VRO contains multiple recordings, FFmpeg may process the entire file as one continuous source; use a DVD-VR-aware editor or split the recording with start and end times:

ffmpeg -ss 00:12:00 -i input.vro -t 00:45:00 -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k -f avi recording.divx

For a no-installation option, upload the VRO file to the free converter on 101convert.com, choose DIVX as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Large DVD recordings may exceed browser upload limits or take longer to process online.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This conversion is a lossy transcode: the VRO’s MPEG-2 video is decoded and encoded again, so it cannot improve the original recording. Keep the original VRO as the archive copy.

DVD-VR video is commonly interlaced at 720×480 for NTSC or 720×576 for PAL. Preserve interlacing for a compatible television workflow; for computer playback, add -vf yadif before the video codec options to deinterlace:

ffmpeg -i input.vro -vf yadif -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k -f avi output.divx

Some VRO discs use CPRM copy protection. FFmpeg and ordinary converters cannot reliably decode protected recordings; the recording must first be transferred using equipment or software that is authorized to read that disc. Renaming .vro to .divx does not convert the video.
