Older media players, editing applications, and hardware devices may accept .divx files but reject the OGM container. Converting the video also helps when an OGM file uses Vorbis audio or embedded subtitles that a DivX-compatible player cannot decode.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is a multimedia container based on Ogg. It can hold video, commonly DivX or Xvid MPEG-4 Part 2 video, together with Vorbis, MP3, or other audio streams and subtitle tracks.

OGM was common in older internet video releases, DVD-ripping workflows, and files produced with tools such as OGMux and VirtualDubMod. VLC, MPC-HC, and other software players can often open it, but many televisions, DVD players, game consoles, and video editors do not support the container or its Vorbis audio.

What the DIVX format is

DivX files use the DivX Media Format, generally associated with an AVI-compatible container, MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile video, and MP3 or AC-3 audio. The .divx extension identifies files intended for DivX software and compatible legacy hardware.

DivX is useful when a device specifically lists DivX playback or when a smaller MPEG-4 Part 2 file is required. It is not the same as modern H.264/AVC video in an MP4 container, and newer devices often support MP4 more reliably than DivX.

How to actually convert OGM to DIVX

FFmpeg is the most predictable desktop method because it can read OGM streams, select individual tracks, encode MPEG-4 Part 2 video, and encode compatible MP3 audio. Check the available streams first:

For a broadly compatible single-video, single-audio conversion, run:

-vtag DX50 marks the MPEG-4 Part 2 stream with the DivX-compatible fourcc. The -q:v 4 setting uses quality-based encoding; lower values generally produce higher quality and larger files. The -map options select the first video and first audio stream while allowing the audio stream to be absent.

For several audio tracks, replace the audio mapping with the required stream, for example -map 0:a:1. AVI-based DivX files have limited support for multiple audio tracks, chapter metadata, and subtitle streams. Extract subtitles separately or burn them into the video with a video filter if the target player cannot load them as external files.

A graphical alternative is Avidemux: open the OGM file, choose an MPEG-4 ASP or Xvid video encoder, choose MP3 for audio, select Output format → AVI Muxer, and save the result. Some versions do not create the DivX Media Format structure; they create a DivX-compatible AVI instead. If the destination only requires a file ending in .divx, FFmpeg can write the AVI-compatible output directly with that extension.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Changing the container alone is not enough when the OGM contains Vorbis audio or a video codec unsupported by the target. Re-encoding the audio and video causes generation loss, so retain the original OGM as an archive.

If inspection shows that the video is already DivX/Xvid and the target accepts its exact profile, video stream copying can avoid another lossy encode, but Vorbis audio may still need conversion:

Stream copying can fail when the source codec, resolution, packed-B-frame behavior, or frame rate is outside the target device's DivX specification. For older hardware, use square-pixel video, a standard frame rate, MP3 audio, and dimensions supported by the device; test the resulting file before converting a large collection.
