What the OGM format is
OGM, or Ogg Media, is an older multimedia container based on Ogg. It commonly stores Xvid or DivX video, Vorbis audio, multiple audio tracks, and sometimes subtitles or chapter information.
OGM files were frequently created with older versions of VirtualDubMod, AVI-Mux GUI, Ogg-compatible encoders, and command-line tools such as MEncoder. You may encounter them in older downloaded video libraries, archived computer recordings, or files produced before modern Matroska and MP4 containers became common.
What the 3GPP format is
3GPP uses the .3gp extension and is a mobile-oriented container defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project. It was designed for cellular phones, MMS attachments, and early mobile video playback.
A 3GP file can contain H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264 video and AMR or AAC audio. Its advantages are broad support on older mobile hardware, relatively small files, and lower bandwidth requirements. Use it when a specific phone, legacy application, or mobile workflow requires .3gp; MP4 is usually a better choice for current devices.
How to convert OGM to 3GPP
Using FFmpeg
FFmpeg is suitable when you need control over stream selection, codecs, resolution, and bitrate.
- Install FFmpeg and place the OGM file in the working folder.
- Inspect its streams with
ffprobe input.ogm. This shows the video codec, audio tracks, dimensions, and frame rate. - Convert the first video and first audio stream with:
ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -profile:v baseline -level 3.0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -vf 'scale=trunc(iw/2)*2:trunc(ih/2)*2' -c:a aac -b:a 96k -movflags +faststart output.3gp
The command re-encodes the video as baseline H.264 and the audio as AAC, a combination supported by many later 3GPP-capable devices. If the OGM has no audio stream, remove -map 0:a:0 and the -c:a and -b:a options. To select another audio track, change the map value, for example -map 0:a:1.
For an older phone with a documented maximum size, add an explicit scale such as -vf 'scale=176:144', then lower the video bitrate with -b:v 128k. Check the phone specification before choosing H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, AMR, or AAC, because support varies substantially between 3GPP devices.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: select the OGM file, choose 3GPP or .3gp as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This option generally chooses compatible codecs automatically but provides less control over stream selection and bitrate.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Changing .ogm to .3gp by renaming the extension does not convert the container or its codecs. Re-encoding is required when the source uses Vorbis, Xvid, or another format unsupported by the target player.
Video re-encoding reduces quality, and the small dimensions and bitrates required by older phones reduce it further. Use the original OGM as the archive copy and treat 3GP as a delivery copy. Multiple audio tracks, OGM subtitles, chapters, and some metadata may not transfer because 3GPP support for those features is limited.
If the resulting file fails on a legacy phone, match the device's specified resolution, frame rate, video codec, audio codec, audio sample rate, and maximum bitrate instead of relying on the general H.264/AAC command.
