Programs and hardware that accept only MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files may reject an older OGM video, even when a media player can open it. Converting it also makes the video easier to import into legacy editors, DVD-authoring software, and devices that expect .mpg or .mpeg files.

What the OGM format is

OGM, usually identified by the .ogm extension, is an Ogg-based multimedia container. It was commonly used for video encoded with Xvid or DivX and audio encoded with Vorbis, and it can contain multiple audio tracks and subtitles.

OGM files were created or packaged by older versions of tools such as Ogg media utilities, VirtualDubMod, MEncoder, and FFmpeg-based applications. You are most likely to encounter them in legacy anime collections, downloaded video archives, and older desktop-media libraries. Modern players often support OGM, but many hardware players, editors, and authoring programs do not.

What the MPEG format is

MPEG is a family of moving-image and audio standards rather than one single codec. A file named .mpg or .mpeg normally contains an MPEG program stream using MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, with MPEG-1 Layer II audio, MP2, or sometimes compatible audio.

MPEG-2 is suitable for older televisions, set-top players, DVD-related workflows, broadcast equipment, and editing applications that require a standard program stream. MPEG-1 offers broader support on very old systems but produces lower quality at comparable bitrates. MPEG should not be confused with MPEG-4 video in an MP4 container; an .mp4 file is usually the better modern distribution format, but it is not the same target as a traditional .mpeg file.

How to actually convert OGM to MPEG

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and inspect its streams first:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm

For a broadly compatible MPEG-2 program stream, encode the first video and first audio stream as follows:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpeg output.mpg

Replace input.ogm with the actual filename. The -map options select the first video and audio tracks; omit them only if automatic stream selection is acceptable. The -q:v 3 setting uses quality-based MPEG-2 encoding, where lower values generally mean higher quality and larger files. For a smaller file, use a fixed video bitrate, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 4000k -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpeg output.mpg

Use MPEG-1 instead when the receiving device explicitly requires it:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v mpeg1video -b:v 1800k -c:a mp2 -b:a 160k -f mpeg output.mpg

Check the resulting file with ffprobe output.mpg or open it in the target application. FFmpeg transcodes the OGM streams in these commands; it does not merely rename the extension.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the OGM file, select MPEG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file when processing finishes. Check the service’s file-size and retention limits before uploading private or very large videos.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion cannot improve the original image. If the OGM video is already heavily compressed, MPEG-2 encoding adds another lossy generation; use the highest practical bitrate that the target device accepts.

OGM files may contain several audio tracks or subtitle streams. A basic conversion normally keeps only the selected video and audio streams, and traditional MPEG program streams generally do not preserve OGM subtitle tracks. Extract subtitles separately or burn them into the video if they must remain visible.

The source and output may use different frame rates, dimensions, aspect ratios, and interlacing modes. If a television or DVD workflow requires a specific standard, set those parameters deliberately instead of relying on automatic conversion. For example, a PAL workflow normally uses 25 fps and 720×576 pixels, while an NTSC workflow commonly uses approximately 29.97 fps and 720×480 pixels.
