Some older video archives use OGM, while modern media players, web workflows, or editing tools expect OGV. Converting the container and, when necessary, the codecs makes the video usable without relying on OGM-specific support.
What the OGM format is
OGM, or Ogg Media, is an older Ogg-based multimedia container that can hold video, audio, subtitles, and multiple tracks. It was commonly produced with OGM tools and used for archived movies, anime, and downloaded video releases. OGM files often contain Xvid or DivX-compatible MPEG-4 Part 2 video with Vorbis audio, although the container can hold other streams.
What the OGV format is
OGV is a video-oriented Ogg container, conventionally containing Theora video and Vorbis audio. It is supported by FFmpeg-based applications, media players, and older HTML5 video workflows. OGV is most useful when a program recognizes Ogg video but does not recognize the older OGM variant.
How to convert OGM to OGV
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. For local, repeatable conversions, FFmpeg provides control over codecs, streams, and quality.
Transcode with FFmpeg
- Install FFmpeg and confirm that the input file is readable with
ffprobe input.ogm. - Convert the first video and available audio stream to the conventional OGV combination with
ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogv. - Open
output.ogvin the target application and check synchronization, subtitles, and every required audio track.
Increase -q:v for better Theora quality and a larger file; FFmpeg's Theora quality scale generally runs from 0 to 10, with higher values producing better quality. Adjust -q:a similarly for Vorbis audio.
Remux without re-encoding when possible
If the OGM already contains codecs accepted by the intended OGV workflow, try ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0 -c copy output.ogv. This changes the container without generation loss, but it can fail or produce limited compatibility when the streams, subtitles, or metadata are not suitable for Ogg video.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Transcoding from Xvid, DivX, or another MPEG-4 video stream to Theora loses quality because the video is decoded and encoded again. Keep the original OGM and use remuxing when it succeeds. OGV is a container rather than one mandatory codec combination, so inspect the resulting streams with ffprobe output.ogv; some current players support Ogg containers but have weak or no Theora support. OGM subtitle tracks may require separate extraction and conversion because FFmpeg cannot preserve every legacy subtitle format inside OGV.
