.m2t instead of Ogg Media .ogm. Conversion usually requires re-encoding because OGM commonly contains Vorbis, Theora, or MPEG-4 streams, while M2T normally carries MPEG-2 video in an MPEG transport stream.
What the OGM format is
OGM, or Ogg Media, is an older container based on Ogg that can hold video, audio, subtitles, and metadata. Files commonly contain Xvid or other MPEG-4 video with Vorbis audio, although OGM itself does not specify a single codec. You may encounter OGM files produced by older versions of VirtualDubMod, OGM tools, and early computer-video encoding workflows. Modern players often support OGM less consistently than Matroska or MP4.
What the M2T format is
M2T is a filename extension commonly used for an MPEG-2 transport stream, especially HDV camera footage. It is suited to devices and editing systems designed for MPEG-2 transport streams and can carry synchronized video and audio in packets that tolerate transmission or recording errors. Typical HDV material uses MPEG-2 video, 48 kHz audio, and a transport-stream bitrate near 25 Mb/s; the extension alone does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, interlacing mode, or HDV profile.
How to convert OGM to M2T
Using FFmpeg
FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. First inspect the streams:
ffprobe -hide_banner input.ogm
For a broadly compatible MPEG-2 transport stream, re-encode the first video and audio streams:
ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 25M -maxrate 25M -minrate 25M -bufsize 2M -c:a mp2 -b:a 384k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.m2t
Change 25M to match the target device or editor. A 25 Mb/s setting is appropriate for many HDV-style targets but can waste space for low-resolution source video. Use the source's native frame size and frame rate unless the receiving device requires a specific format; scaling or changing frame rate adds another quality loss.
If the OGM contains multiple audio tracks, select the required track with a map such as -map 0:a:1. OGM subtitles generally will not become usable M2T subtitle tracks through this command; extract or burn them separately if the destination workflow requires them.
Using 101convert.com
You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the OGM file, choose M2T as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes.
Quality and compatibility limits
Re-encoding cannot restore detail already lost in the OGM source. MPEG-2 at a higher bitrate may produce a larger file without improving the image. A direct stream copy such as -c copy is only suitable when the source codecs and stream structure are accepted by the target M2T workflow; it does not convert Vorbis or Theora into the MPEG-2 and MPEG audio formats expected by many devices.
For a specific HDV deck or camera editor, verify its required frame size, frame rate, field order, GOP structure, video profile, audio codec, and bitrate. A generic MPEG transport stream named .m2t may still be rejected if those parameters do not match the device's HDV specification.
