A 3GP file is useful when an older mobile phone, embedded player, or messaging system does not accept OGM video. Conversion also reduces resolution and bitrate for smaller files, but the video and audio normally must be re-encoded.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is a multimedia container based on Ogg. It can hold video such as Xvid, DivX, or Theora, audio such as Vorbis, and sometimes multiple audio tracks or subtitle streams. OGM files were common in older computer video collections and were produced by tools including older versions of VirtualDubMod and Ogg-compatible encoding utilities. Modern players often support the codecs inside OGM without supporting every OGM feature, while phones and simple video editors commonly reject the .ogm container.

What the 3GP format is

3GP is a compact container defined for 3G mobile networks and mobile devices. It commonly contains MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 video with AAC or AMR audio. Its low resolutions, modest bitrates, and limited stream structure produce small files that work on many older phones, surveillance viewers, and embedded playback systems. Newer devices may support MP4 more reliably, so 3GP is mainly appropriate when the target device or application specifically requires it.

How to convert OGM to 3GP

For dependable control over codecs, streams, resolution, and bitrate, use FFmpeg. It is a desktop command-line converter available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  1. Install FFmpeg and confirm that the command is available with ffmpeg -version.
  2. Inspect the source streams with ffprobe input.ogm. Check the video dimensions, frame rate, audio codec, and number of audio or subtitle streams.
  3. Convert the first video and first audio stream with a broadly compatible 3GP profile:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg4 -b:v 500k -vf "scale=320:trunc(ow/a/2)*2" -c:a aac -b:a 64k -ar 22050 -ac 1 -f 3gp output.3gp

The -map options prevent unwanted secondary streams from being copied. The question mark after the audio stream allows conversion to continue if the OGM contains no audio. Change 320 and 500k to match the destination device; for example, use a width of 176 or 240 for very old phones.

For devices that specifically require AMR-NB audio, use an FFmpeg build with the AMR encoder and run:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v h263 -s 176x144 -r 15 -b:v 128k -c:a libopencore_amrnb -ar 8000 -ac 1 -b:a 12.2k -f 3gp output.3gp

If you do not want to install software, the file can be converted for free on the 101convert.com website.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Re-encoding is usually required because OGM codecs and 3GP-compatible codecs do not necessarily match. Each re-encode reduces quality, so keep the original OGM and use the highest bitrate the target device accepts. 3GP has limited support for multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and unusual frame rates; the FFmpeg commands above deliberately select one video stream and one audio stream. Test the result on the intended phone or player, because support for H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, AAC, and maximum resolution varies substantially between 3GP devices.
