Older mobile phones, MMS systems, and embedded players may require a .3gp file instead of a Windows Media Center recording. Converting the recording makes it usable on those devices and can reduce its size, but the video and audio must be re-encoded.

What the DVR-MS format is

DVR-MS is Microsoft’s recorded-television container, used mainly by Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows Vista Media Center, and Windows 7 Media Center. It commonly contains MPEG-2 video with MPEG-1 Layer II or AC-3 audio, along with broadcast metadata, multiple streams, and sometimes copy-protection information.

Files with the .dvr-ms extension are usually found in old Media Center recording folders or backups. DVR-MS is not a phone or camera format, and modern players and editors may not open it directly. A protected recording may be unreadable to third-party conversion software; conversion must not be used to bypass DRM or copying restrictions.

What the 3GP format is

3GP is a compact multimedia container standardized for 3G mobile networks. It was designed for older phones, MMS attachments, and devices with limited storage and processing capacity. Depending on the 3GP profile, it can contain H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video with AMR audio, or H.264 video with AAC audio.

3GP can produce smaller files than the original MPEG-2 recording, but it is primarily useful when the receiving phone, messaging system, or embedded player specifically requires .3gp. Current smartphones generally support MP4 more reliably and at better quality. Renaming .dvr-ms to .3gp does not convert the file; the streams must be decoded and encoded into codecs supported by the target device.

How to convert DVR-MS to 3GP

The built-in converter on 101convert.com can convert the file without installing desktop software:

  1. Open the free converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select or upload the .dvr-ms recording.
  3. Choose 3GP as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .3gp file and test it on the intended phone or player.

Do not upload recordings containing private material unless the service’s handling of uploaded files is acceptable to you. The source must be readable and free of restrictions that prevent authorized conversion.

Desktop conversion with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable for repeatable conversions and manual control of resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Use a current build and verify that it can read the source file. This command creates a relatively compatible H.264/AAC 3GP file:

ffmpeg -i "recording.dvr-ms" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -vf "scale=320:-2" -r 15 -c:v libx264 -profile:v baseline -level 3.0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -b:v 350k -c:a aac -b:a 64k -ar 22050 -ac 1 -f 3gp "recording.3gp"

For a newer phone, increase the scale dimensions and video bitrate if necessary. For an older handset that specifically requires H.263 and AMR-NB, use encoders available in the installed FFmpeg build, for example:

ffmpeg -i "recording.dvr-ms" -vf "scale=176:-2" -r 15 -c:v h263 -b:v 150k -c:a amr_nb -ar 8000 -ac 1 -b:a 12.2k -f 3gp "legacy-phone.3gp"

Some FFmpeg builds do not include an AMR-NB encoder. If the second command reports that h263 or amr_nb is unavailable, use the H.264/AAC command for a device that supports that combination, or install a build containing the required encoders. If FFmpeg cannot open the DVR-MS input, the recording may use unsupported copy protection or an input variant unavailable in that build.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • Most DVR-MS recordings use MPEG-2, so converting to H.264 or H.263 is a lossy second-generation encode. Keep the original file for archival use.
  • A .3gp extension does not guarantee compatibility. Older phones may reject H.264, AAC, high resolutions, high bitrates, or unsupported frame rates.
  • For legacy devices, use the manufacturer’s limits; common starting points are 176×144 or 320×240 pixels, 15 frames per second, mono audio, and a low video bitrate.
  • Media Center recordings may be interlaced. If the output shows combing or horizontal lines, deinterlace before scaling with -vf "yadif,scale=320:-2".
  • Check the converted file on the actual target device because 3GP codec support varies substantially between phone models.
