What the DVR-MS format is
DVR-MS is a Microsoft recording container based on ASF (Advanced Systems Format). Windows Media Center used it for scheduled and live television recordings, typically storing MPEG-2 video, audio, metadata, and sometimes broadcast copy-protection information. You may encounter DVR-MS files on older Windows PCs, Media Center recording folders, or backups from compatible TV tuner software.
What the TRP format is
TRP is commonly an MPEG transport stream file used by digital television receivers, set-top boxes, satellite receivers, and some hardware media players. It generally contains packetized MPEG-2 or H.264 video with MPEG or AAC audio. Its transport-stream structure supports broadcast-style multiplexing and error handling, but device compatibility depends on the exact codecs, resolutions, audio formats, and stream parameters the device accepts.
How to convert DVR-MS to TRP
Using the online converter
- Open the free converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the DVR-MS file.
- Select
TRPas the output format and start the conversion. - Download the resulting file and test it on the intended player or receiver.
This method requires no installed software. Large recordings may take longer to upload and process, and protected DVR-MS recordings may be rejected or produce an unusable result.
Using FFmpeg on a desktop
FFmpeg can often read DVR-MS as an ASF-derived input and write a standard MPEG transport stream. A stream-copy attempt preserves the original encoded audio and video without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.dvr-ms -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpegts output.trp
If the target device does not support the source codecs or stream parameters, transcode to common MPEG-2 and MP2 settings:
ffmpeg -i input.dvr-ms -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 6000k -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp
Replace the filenames with the actual paths. If FFmpeg cannot identify the input, first verify that the file is a playable, unprotected recording; some DVR-MS variants require a Windows Media Center-compatible application to decode or export them.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Stream copying does not reduce quality, but it only changes the container. Transcoding can make the result more compatible while reducing quality and increasing processing time. A DVR-MS file containing DRM or broadcast copy protection may not be convertible after it has been moved away from the authorized recording environment.
The .trp extension does not define one universal device profile. If a receiver rejects the output, check its required video codec, frame size, frame rate, audio codec, bitrate, aspect ratio, and maximum file size. Some devices require MPEG-2 video in a particular resolution and MP2 audio rather than H.264 or AAC. A generic MPEG transport stream may need device-specific remuxing or transcoding even when it has the correct extension.
