Microsoft Media Center recordings use DVR-MS, while older DVD players and VCD authoring software expect VCD-compliant MPEG-1 video. Converting is useful when you need to play a recording on a VCD-compatible player, edit it in legacy video software, or archive it as a disc image.
What the DVR-MS format is
DVR-MS is a Microsoft container used primarily by Windows Media Center in Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. It stores recorded television broadcasts, including MPEG-2 video, audio, program metadata, and sometimes copy-protection information. You usually encounter it in a Media Center recording folder with the .dvr-ms extension.
A DVR-MS file may contain broadcast-standard video rather than a format suitable for direct VCD authoring. Files marked as copy-once or otherwise protected may not decode or convert unless the recording system permits playback and conversion.
What the VCD format is
Video CD stores MPEG-1 video and MPEG-1 Layer II audio on a CD using a defined disc structure. Standard VCD video is 352×240 pixels at 29.97 fps for NTSC or 352×288 pixels at 25 fps for PAL, normally with video at 1,150 kbit/s and audio at 224 kbit/s, 44.1 kHz stereo.
VCD has broad compatibility with older DVD players, standalone VCD players, and some software media players, but its resolution and bitrate are much lower than DVD, SVCD, or modern video formats. A VCD deliverable can mean a compliant MPEG file, commonly given an .mpg extension, or a complete disc image containing the required VCD folders.
How to convert DVR-MS to VCD
For a simple file conversion, you can use the built-in converter at 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the .dvr-ms file, select VCD as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. If the service returns an MPEG file rather than a disc image, use VCD authoring software before burning it.
For local processing, FFmpeg can decode many unprotected DVR-MS files and produce VCD-compliant MPEG-1. Choose the television standard that matches the intended player:
ffmpeg -i recording.dvr-ms -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -vf "scale=352:240,fps=30000/1001" -c:v mpeg1video -b:v 1150k -minrate 1150k -maxrate 1150k -bufsize 327k -c:a mp2 -b:a 224k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f mpeg vcd-ntsc.mpgFor PAL, use scale=352:288,fps=25 instead:
ffmpeg -i recording.dvr-ms -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -vf "scale=352:288,fps=25" -c:v mpeg1video -b:v 1150k -minrate 1150k -maxrate 1150k -bufsize 327k -c:a mp2 -b:a 224k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f mpeg vcd-pal.mpgThese commands create a VCD-compatible MPEG stream, not the complete CD filesystem. To create a BIN/CUE disc image, install VCDImager and run:
vcdimager -t vcd2 -c vcd.cue -b vcd.bin vcd-ntsc.mpgUse -t vcd2 for either standard VCD 2.0 NTSC or PAL authoring; select the matching source standard and player compatibility during testing. Burn the resulting .cue file with a disc-burning application that supports BIN/CUE images. Do not burn the MPEG file as an ordinary data CD if the player requires a true VCD.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Conversion cannot improve the original recording. DVR-MS material larger than VCD resolution is downscaled, and VCD encoding introduces additional MPEG-1 compression. Long recordings may exceed the practical capacity of a 74- or 80-minute CD because VCD uses a fixed bitrate of approximately 10.1 Mbps including audio and overhead; split the recording into multiple titles when necessary.
Check the source frame rate and broadcast standard before encoding. NTSC video authored as PAL, or PAL video authored as NTSC, can produce incorrect speed, motion, or playback compatibility. FFmpeg may fail on DRM-protected DVR-MS recordings; use an authorized, playable copy from the original Media Center system, and do not bypass copy protection.
