Older media players and CD/DVD players may not recognize OGM files, while VCD-compatible MPEG-1 video is supported by many legacy devices. Converting is also useful when you need to author the video onto a Video CD for physical distribution or archival playback.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is an older multimedia container based on Ogg. It can hold video, audio, subtitles, and metadata, commonly using codecs such as Xvid, DivX, Vorbis, or other codecs supported by VirtualDubMod, MPlayer/MEncoder, and older video-encoding tools.

You usually encounter OGM files in older downloaded video collections, archived television recordings, and files created before Matroska became the more common container for multiple audio and subtitle tracks. The .ogm extension identifies the container, not a single video codec.

What the VCD format is

Video CD is a CD-based format built around MPEG-1 system streams. A compliant VCD normally uses 352×288 pixels at 25 fps for PAL or 352×240 pixels at approximately 29.97 fps for NTSC, MPEG-1 video near 1,150 kbit/s, and 44.1 kHz MPEG-1 Layer II audio near 224 kbit/s.

A VCD is not simply an MPEG file renamed to .dat. The video must be encoded to VCD specifications and then authored into a disc image containing the required MPEGAV structure. VCD is useful for older standalone players, some game consoles, and computers with CD-ROM drives, but its low resolution and fixed bitrate produce noticeably lower quality than modern formats.

How to convert OGM to VCD

Using FFmpeg and VCDImager

  1. Install FFmpeg and VCDImager on a desktop computer.
  2. Check the source streams with ffprobe input.ogm. Select the desired video and audio tracks if the OGM contains multiple streams.
  3. Encode a PAL-compatible VCD stream with:
    ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -target pal-vcd output.mpg
For an NTSC disc, replace pal-vcd with ntsc-vcd.
  4. Open output.mpg in a media player and check the picture, audio synchronization, and selected language before authoring.
  5. Create the VCD disc image with VCDImager:
    vcdimager -t vcd2 -c videocd.cue -b videocd.bin output.mpg
  6. Burn videocd.cue with CD-writing software that supports cue/bin images. Do not burn the MPEG file as an ordinary data file; the player needs the authored VCD structure.

If the OGM has subtitles, standard VCD authoring will not preserve them as selectable subtitle tracks. Render them into the picture before encoding, or omit them. To choose another audio stream, change the second stream mapping, for example -map 0:a:1.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Select OGM as the input and VCD or MPEG-1 as the output when that option is available, then verify that the resulting stream is VCD-compliant before burning it.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion normally requires re-encoding because OGM video codecs and parameters rarely match VCD requirements. This causes additional generation loss, and converting a high-resolution source cannot improve VCD quality.

Choose PAL or NTSC to match the intended player and television standard. If the source frame rate differs, FFmpeg will convert it during encoding; fast motion may show judder or duplicated frames. A VCD also has a capacity limit based mainly on playing time, with approximately 74 or 80 minutes fitting on common CDs.
