A legacy Video CD player, set-top DVD player, or disc-authoring workflow may require MPEG-1 Video CD output, while Camtasia stores screen recordings as TREC files. The conversion therefore requires exporting the TREC recording to an intermediate video file and encoding that file to the VCD specification.

What the TREC format is

TREC is a proprietary Camtasia recording container created by TechSmith Camtasia Recorder and Camtasia. It can contain screen video, microphone audio, webcam footage, cursor data, and recording metadata, and is commonly encountered after recording software demonstrations, training sessions, presentations, or support videos.

TREC is intended for editing in Camtasia rather than direct playback in general-purpose media players. A TREC file normally must be opened in a compatible Camtasia version and exported to MP4 or another standard video format before conversion to VCD.

What the VCD format is

Video CD is a disc-based format that stores MPEG-1 video and MPEG-1 Layer II audio in a defined CD layout. It works with many older DVD players, VCD players, and software players, but its resolution and bitrate are much lower than those of modern MP4 video.

Standard video parameters are 352×288 pixels at 25 fps for PAL or 352×240 pixels at approximately 29.97 fps for NTSC. VCD audio uses 44.1 kHz MPEG audio, normally at 224 kbit/s. A compliant video stream alone is not a complete VCD; disc-authoring software must create the required directory and navigation structure.

How to convert TREC to VCD

  1. Open the .trec file in Camtasia. In current Camtasia releases, use Export → Local File or the equivalent MP4 export command, then save an H.264 MP4 such as recording.mp4.
  2. Choose the television standard required by the player. Use PAL for a PAL-region player and NTSC for an NTSC-region player; do not mix the standards when authoring the disc.
  3. Encode the exported video with FFmpeg. For PAL, use:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -target pal-vcd recording-vcd.mpg

For NTSC, use:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -target ntsc-vcd recording-vcd.mpg

These FFmpeg presets select the VCD MPEG-1 video size, frame rate, bitrate, and 44.1 kHz MPEG audio settings. If the source has a nonstandard aspect ratio, inspect the result because automatic scaling may stretch or crop the recording.

  1. Author the compliant MPEG file as a VCD image with a tool such as VCDImager:

vcdimager -t vcd2 -c videocd.cue -b videocd.bin recording-vcd.mpg

Burn the resulting videocd.cue and videocd.bin image as a disc image, not as ordinary files copied to a data CD. A disc-burning application that supports BIN/CUE images can perform this step.

For a no-installation option, the free converter on 101convert.com can be used if its TREC and VCD conversion options are available for the file; download the resulting VCD-compatible output and author or burn it as a Video CD if the service supplies only an MPEG file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

VCD encoding is highly lossy and limits screen recordings to roughly 352-pixel horizontal resolution, so small interface text and cursor details may become difficult to read. Export from Camtasia at the highest available quality first; increasing the quality after MPEG-1 encoding cannot restore lost detail.

A standard 74-minute CD holds about 74 minutes of VCD content, while an 80-minute CD holds about 80 minutes. Longer recordings must be divided across discs or reduced to a nonstandard format that may not play in hardware VCD devices.

Some modern players accept the MPEG file without a properly authored VCD, but hardware compatibility requires the Video CD disc structure. Test the authored disc on the intended player, particularly when the source frame rate, aspect ratio, or recording duration differs from the standard.
