Programs and DVD players that require DVD-Video cannot use a Camtasia .trec recording directly. Converting it normally requires exporting the recording to a standard video first, then authoring a DVD-Video disc that contains .vob files.

What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith’s proprietary recording container used by Camtasia and TechSmith Recorder. It can store screen-capture video, microphone audio, webcam footage, cursor data, recording metadata, and editing information in one file.

You commonly encounter .trec files after recording a presentation, software demonstration, training session, or desktop tutorial with Camtasia. A TREC file is intended to be opened and edited in Camtasia; general video players and DVD authoring applications usually do not support it directly.

What the VOB format is

VOB is the container used in a DVD-Video title set. Files such as VTS_01_1.VOB contain DVD-compatible MPEG-2 video, audio streams, subtitles, menus, and navigation-related data.

VOB is useful when the result must play in a standalone DVD player or be copied to a DVD’s VIDEO_TS folder. It is not a general-purpose replacement for MP4: VOB files are larger, DVD-Video has lower resolution and bitrate limits than modern formats, and a usable disc also needs IFO and BUP files created by DVD-authoring software.

How to actually convert TREC to VOB

Recommended method: Camtasia export followed by DVD authoring

  1. Open the TREC recording in Camtasia. Adjust the timeline, crop unwanted areas, and set the project dimensions before exporting.
  2. Choose Export → Local File → MP4 or the equivalent MP4 export command in your Camtasia version. Use the original frame rate and select a high-quality H.264 profile; this MP4 is an intermediate file, not the final VOB.
  3. Open the exported MP4 in a DVD-authoring application such as DVDStyler. Add the video to a title, create optional menus and chapters, and select the television standard required by the destination player: NTSC or PAL.
  4. Set the aspect ratio to match the source. Use 16:9 for a widescreen recording and 4:3 for a standard-format recording unless the authoring application must letterbox it.
  5. Choose Burn or Generate DVD files. The authoring program converts the MP4 to DVD-compliant MPEG-2 and creates a VIDEO_TS folder containing files such as VTS_01_1.VOB, .IFO, and .BUP.
  6. Test the generated VIDEO_TS folder in a software DVD player before burning it to a disc. Burn the folder as a DVD-Video project, not as ordinary data files.

Command-line video conversion

If Camtasia or another decoder has already produced an MP4, FFmpeg can create DVD-compatible MPEG-2 program-stream output:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -target ntsc-dvd -aspect 16:9 dvd-video.mpg

For PAL output, use -target pal-dvd instead. This produces an MPEG program stream that may be renamed or packaged as VOB by some tools, but renaming dvd-video.mpg to .vob does not create a valid DVD. Use a DVD-authoring application when menu navigation, chapters, IFO files, BUP backups, and standalone-player compatibility are required.

Browser-based conversion

You can try the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. TREC support depends on the converter’s available decoder; if the file is rejected, export it from Camtasia as MP4 first and convert or author that standard video.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

DVD-Video imposes a maximum video frame size of 720×480 for NTSC or 720×576 for PAL, so a high-resolution screen recording will be downscaled. Small interface text may become difficult to read; exporting the Camtasia project at a larger size cannot restore detail lost during DVD encoding.

DVD capacity is usually 4.7 GB for a single-layer disc. Authoring software lowers the MPEG-2 bitrate when the video is too long, reducing quality. TREC recordings with separate webcam or cursor tracks may require Camtasia rendering because DVD-Video cannot preserve Camtasia’s editable overlays and metadata.

Choose the correct television standard and avoid mixing frame-rate conversions where possible. Modern computers can usually play the resulting MPEG-2 files, but a standalone player may require finalized DVD-Video structure and a compatible recordable-disc format.
