IFV recordings usually come from a CCTV or DVR system, while VOB is used by DVD-Video software and players. Conversion is needed when surveillance footage must be opened in DVD-authoring software, archived on a video DVD, or played on equipment that does not recognize the original recorder format.

What the IFV format is

In the video context, IFV is a proprietary surveillance-video container used by some DVR, NVR, and security-camera systems. The exact codec, audio format, timestamp data, and encryption depend on the recorder vendor; the .ifv extension alone does not identify a universal specification.

IFV files are commonly created when footage is exported from a security recorder or copied from its storage media. They may open only in the manufacturer’s surveillance player, which can also provide authentication, camera information, motion metadata, and timestamp overlays. A normal media player or FFmpeg may reject an IFV file if its video stream is proprietary or encrypted.

What the VOB format is

VOB means Video Object and is the primary audiovisual container used inside a DVD-Video VIDEO_TS folder. It normally carries MPEG-2 video with AC-3, MPEG, or PCM audio, plus DVD navigation and subtitle data when generated as part of a complete DVD structure.

VOB is suitable for DVD-authoring applications and many standalone DVD players. A single converted .vob file is not automatically a playable DVD: menu information, chapter navigation, file naming, and VIDEO_TS.IFO files are normally created during DVD authoring.

How to convert IFV to VOB

Use the built-in converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the IFV file, choose VOB as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result if the service can decode that particular IFV variant. Proprietary or encrypted surveillance files may not be accepted; in that case, export the recording through the camera vendor’s player first.

Export through the recorder’s player, then create VOB

  1. Open the IFV in the DVR manufacturer’s playback or export program.
  2. Use Export, Save as, or Convert and select a standard format such as MP4, AVI, or MPEG-2. Choose the original resolution and frame rate when those options are available.
  3. Check the exported file in VLC or another standard player. If it plays correctly, convert that intermediate file with FFmpeg.

Convert a readable file with FFmpeg

Install FFmpeg, place the exported video in the working directory, and run one of these DVD-target commands:

ffmpeg -i exported.mp4 -target pal-dvd -aspect 4:3 -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k output.vob

For North American or other NTSC DVD systems, use:

ffmpeg -i exported.mp4 -target ntsc-dvd -aspect 4:3 -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k output.vob

Use -aspect 16:9 for widescreen footage. The pal-dvd and ntsc-dvd targets convert the video to DVD-compatible MPEG-2 parameters and audio. If the source is already DVD-compatible, re-encoding may be avoidable, but the authoring program must still build the DVD structure.

To inspect whether FFmpeg can read the original file, run ffprobe input.ifv. If it reports an unknown format, invalid data, or no video stream, FFmpeg cannot perform a direct conversion; use the recorder’s export function or its supplied codec instead.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Converting IFV to VOB does not restore detail lost by the surveillance recorder. DVD-Video is limited to standard-definition MPEG-2, so high-definition IFV footage will be downscaled and normally re-encoded. Re-encoding can reduce sharpness and introduce motion artifacts, especially in low-light or fast-moving scenes.

Choose PAL or NTSC to match the intended DVD player. PAL commonly uses 720×576 at 25 frames per second, while NTSC commonly uses 720×480 at approximately 29.97 frames per second; the source may require frame-rate conversion.

For evidence or compliance archives, retain the original IFV and the vendor’s player alongside the converted file. A converted VOB may omit camera IDs, event metadata, digital signatures, timestamps, or authentication features. If the goal is a physical DVD, import the converted video into DVD-authoring software and create a complete VIDEO_TS folder instead of copying one VOB directly to a disc.
