Some legacy video software and surveillance systems save recordings as IFV, while HDV editors and camcorders commonly expect M2T. Converting the file produces an MPEG-2 transport stream that is easier to import into compatible video tools and hardware.
What the IFV format is
In the Video category, IFV commonly refers to a legacy Indeo Video Format file, although some DVR and CCTV products also use the extension for proprietary recordings. The exact structure depends on the program or device that created the file.
IFV files are most often encountered in old Windows multimedia archives, legacy video applications, and exported surveillance recordings. A normal media player may not decode them because the required codec or vendor-specific demultiplexer is no longer installed.
What the M2T format is
M2T is usually an MPEG-2 Transport Stream containing MPEG-2 video and, commonly, MPEG-1 Layer II audio. HDV camcorders and editing applications use it for high-definition recordings, typically at fixed transport-stream bitrates and frame rates.
M2T is useful when an editor, capture utility, or HDV device specifically requires an MPEG-2 transport stream. The extension describes the container; it does not guarantee a particular resolution, bitrate, frame rate, or audio stream.
How to convert IFV to M2T
Convert online without installing software
- Open the converter on 101convert.com.
- Choose IFV as the input format and M2T as the output format.
- Upload the recording, start the conversion, and download the resulting
.m2tfile.
This method is suitable when the service recognizes the particular IFV variant. Keep the original file, especially for surveillance footage, because conversion may remove proprietary timestamps, indexes, or playback metadata.
Convert locally with FFmpeg
First test whether the installed FFmpeg build can read the file:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams input.ifv
If FFprobe identifies video and audio streams, create an MPEG-2 transport stream with:
ffmpeg -i input.ifv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 25M -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a mp2 -b:a 384k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.m2t
The 25M setting matches a common HDV-style bitrate but is not mandatory for every M2T workflow. Change the video bitrate, frame size, and frame rate when the receiving editor or device specifies different requirements.
If FFprobe reports an unsupported or invalid input, the IFV is probably a proprietary DVR variant or uses a legacy codec absent from that FFmpeg build. Use the original vendor’s player or export utility to save the recording as AVI or another standard intermediate format, then run the FFmpeg conversion on that exported file.
Quality and compatibility considerations
Transcoding to MPEG-2 is normally lossy; it cannot restore detail already lost in the IFV source. The output can also be larger because MPEG-2 at HDV-like bitrates is less efficient than many newer codecs.
Renaming .ifv to .m2t does not convert the content. A valid M2T file must contain an MPEG transport stream, and older HDV equipment may additionally require MPEG-2 video, 1440×1080 dimensions, interlaced 25 or 30 fps, a roughly 25 Mbps bitrate, and 48 kHz Layer II audio.
Check the converted file by opening it in the target editor or device. If video appears stretched, preserve the source’s display-aspect-ratio metadata or set the intended aspect ratio manually during import.
