Older DVR or capture software may save recordings as IFV, while an MPEG-1 decoder, authoring tool, or legacy playback device may require M1V. Converting the file produces an MPEG-1 video-only elementary stream, so any IFV audio is not retained in the M1V output.
What the IFV format is
IFV is a legacy video format associated with proprietary or older video-capture and surveillance applications. IFV files can contain compressed video with format details that depend on the software or recorder that created them; the extension alone does not guarantee a single codec profile.
You usually encounter IFV files in exported CCTV recordings, archived capture sessions, and older multimedia software. A current media player may not decode every IFV variant, and some security systems require their original viewer or export utility to read the file.
What the M1V format is
M1V is an MPEG-1 video elementary stream. It stores video only; unlike an MPEG program stream such as MPG, it has no container track for audio, subtitles, chapters, or metadata.
M1V is useful for legacy MPEG-1-compatible hardware, authoring applications, and workflows that explicitly request a separate video stream. Its broad compatibility is offset by MPEG-1's lower compression efficiency and limited support for modern resolutions and frame rates.
How to convert IFV to M1V
Using 101convert.com
- Open the IFV-to-M1V converter on 101convert.com.
- Select the
.ifvfile and chooseM1Vas the output format. - Start the conversion and download the resulting
.m1vfile when processing finishes.
This method requires no locally installed conversion software. Do not use it for recordings subject to privacy or retention restrictions unless the service's handling policy is acceptable for that material.
Using FFmpeg
FFmpeg can decode IFV variants that its installed build recognizes and can encode the video as an MPEG-1 elementary stream:
ffmpeg -i input.ifv -map 0:v:0 -an -c:v mpeg1video -q:v 2 -f mpeg1video output.m1v
-map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream, -an discards audio because M1V cannot contain it, and -f mpeg1video forces elementary MPEG-1 output. Use a bitrate instead of quality-based encoding when the receiving device specifies one:
ffmpeg -i input.ifv -map 0:v:0 -an -c:v mpeg1video -b:v 2000k -maxrate 2000k -bufsize 1835k -f mpeg1video output.m1v
Check whether FFmpeg can inspect the source before converting:
ffprobe input.ifv
If FFmpeg reports an unknown format or codec, open the recording in the DVR manufacturer's viewer and use its Export or Save as AVI function first. Then convert the exported file:
ffmpeg -i intermediate.avi -map 0:v:0 -an -c:v mpeg1video -q:v 2 -f mpeg1video output.m1v
Quality and compatibility limitations
The conversion decodes the original frames and re-encodes them as MPEG-1, so it is lossy. Keep the original IFV as the archival copy; increasing the M1V bitrate cannot restore detail already lost in the source.
Because M1V has no audio stream, use an MPEG program stream such as .mpg if synchronized sound is required. An MPEG-1 output also may require standard-compatible dimensions, frame rate, and bitrate; older equipment commonly expects 352×240 or 352×288 video at approximately 1.15 Mbps, while other applications accept wider settings.
Proprietary IFV files may be encrypted, indexed through a companion database, or dependent on recorder-specific timestamps. In those cases, only the original surveillance software may be able to produce a usable intermediate video.
