TOD recordings usually come from JVC Everio camcorders, while many older players and editing tools expect MPEG-1 video instead. Converting the file creates an M1V video-only stream, so any audio in the original must be saved separately or discarded.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a video format used by several JVC Everio camcorders. It normally contains MPEG-2 video inside a transport-stream-style file, often at 1440×1080 resolution with interlaced scanning; the camera may also create a matching .MOI metadata file. VLC media player and FFmpeg can read TOD files, although some older applications recognize them only after the extension is changed to .MPG or .M2T.

What the M1V format is

M1V is a raw MPEG-1 video elementary stream. It contains video only, with no audio track, subtitles, or general-purpose container metadata. M1V is useful when a legacy MPEG-1 decoder, authoring application, or hardware device specifically requires an MPEG-1 video stream; for ordinary playback, an MPEG container such as .MPG is usually more convenient.

How to actually convert TOD to M1V

You can convert the file online for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the TOD file, select M1V as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Because M1V has no audio channel, the service may omit audio from the result.

For local conversion, FFmpeg provides direct control over the MPEG-1 encoder:

ffmpeg -i input.TOD -map 0:v:0 -c:v mpeg1video -q:v 2 -f m1v output.m1v

-map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream, -c:v mpeg1video performs the required MPEG-1 video encoding, and -f m1v writes a raw MPEG-1 video stream. The command intentionally excludes audio because M1V cannot contain it.

If the target device requires a standard DVD-sized frame, use a compatible output size and preserve the source display shape separately:

ffmpeg -i input.TOD -map 0:v:0 -vf "scale=720:576" -aspect 16:9 -c:v mpeg1video -b:v 4000k -f m1v output.m1v

Use 720:576 for a PAL-oriented device and 720:480 for an NTSC-oriented device. Do not change the extension alone: TOD contains MPEG-2 material, whereas M1V requires MPEG-1 video encoding.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion from TOD to M1V is a lossy re-encode from MPEG-2 to the older MPEG-1 codec, so fine detail and motion quality will decrease. M1V also has no standard way to carry the original audio; use a separate audio extraction workflow if the soundtrack is needed.

Interlaced TOD footage can retain combing artifacts when displayed on progressive screens. For progressive output, add a deinterlacing filter such as -vf "bwdif,scale=720:576", but this changes the picture and removes temporal detail. Test the output with the exact legacy player or authoring program, because support for raw M1V streams is less consistent than support for MPEG-1 video inside an .MPG container.
