JVC Everio camcorders produced TOD recordings, while older Windows software and devices may expect ASF containers. Converting the footage can make it easier to open, edit, or distribute in applications built around Microsoft media formats.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a video file format used by selected JVC Everio high-definition camcorders. A TOD file generally contains MPEG-2 video and camera-recorded audio in a transport-stream-style container, commonly at 1440×1080 or 1920×1080 with interlaced video.

You usually encounter .tod files after copying recordings from an older JVC camcorder or its memory card. Some cameras also created companion files or lower-resolution versions, but changing the extension does not convert the underlying video.

What the ASF format is

ASF, or Advanced Systems Format, is a Microsoft media container designed for streaming and storing synchronized audio and video. It is associated with Windows Media codecs, especially WMV video and WMA audio, and uses the .asf extension; related Windows Media files commonly use .wmv or .wma.

ASF can provide better compatibility with software that expects Windows Media streams, but it is not inherently a quality-improving format. A TOD recording normally needs video and often audio transcoding because ASF workflows commonly use WMV and WMA codecs rather than the original MPEG-2 stream.

How to actually convert TOD to ASF

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a build that includes the wmv2 video encoder and wmav2 audio encoder, then run:

ffmpeg -i input.tod -c:v wmv2 -b:v 5M -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k output.asf

Replace input.tod with the source filename. The command decodes the TOD stream, encodes video as WMV2 at approximately 5 Mb/s, encodes audio as WMA, and writes an ASF container.

For interlaced camcorder footage, retain the original field structure when required by the target editor. FFmpeg can explicitly mark the output as interlaced with:

ffmpeg -i input.tod -vf interlace -flags +ilme+ildct -c:v wmv2 -b:v 5M -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k output.asf

Do not apply this filter if FFmpeg already detects and preserves interlacing, because doing so can create incorrect field handling. Inspect the source first with ffprobe input.tod.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the TOD file, choose ASF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Uploading footage transfers it to a third-party service, so desktop conversion is preferable for private recordings or large files.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • Transcoding from MPEG-2 to WMV2 is lossy. Use a higher video bitrate, such as 8M or 10M, when preserving detail matters more than file size.
  • ASF compatibility depends on the application and its installed codecs. WMV2 video with WMA audio is generally safer for older Windows software than placing the original MPEG-2 stream inside ASF.
  • Conversion does not deinterlace, upscale, or restore damaged footage. Deinterlace only when the destination is progressive, and expect some loss of vertical detail.
  • Keep the original TOD file as the archival master. ASF is a delivery or compatibility copy, not a lossless preservation format.
