JVC Everio camcorders often record high-definition video as .TOD, while Blu-ray, AVCHD, and some media players expect .M2TS. Converting the container can make the footage easier to import, author, archive, or play without re-encoding the video.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a high-definition MPEG-2 transport-stream recording format used mainly by JVC Everio camcorders, especially models that recorded to hard drives or memory cards. A TOD file commonly contains MPEG-2 video with stereo or multichannel audio and may be accompanied by JVC metadata or playlist files.

Some editing applications recognize the MPEG-2 stream inside a TOD file but do not identify the .TOD extension correctly. Copying the footage to a computer can also expose TOD files when the camera's bundled software is unavailable or when the original camera directory structure has been preserved.

What the M2TS format is

M2TS is the filename extension commonly used for BDAV MPEG-2 transport streams. Blu-ray discs, AVCHD camcorders, Blu-ray folders, and some hardware players use it for video streams that can contain MPEG-2, H.264/AVC, or other supported codecs with synchronized audio, subtitles, and metadata.

Compared with a raw transport-stream file, an M2TS stream uses Blu-ray-style packetization and is more likely to be accepted by Blu-ray authoring software and AVCHD-compatible devices. The extension alone does not guarantee compatibility: the codecs, frame rate, resolution, audio format, and stream structure must also meet the target device's requirements.

How to actually convert TOD to M2TS

For a no-install option, use the converter on 101convert.com: choose the TOD file, select M2TS as the output format, start the conversion, then save the resulting file. Avoid uploading footage that contains private or sensitive material.

For local conversion, FFmpeg can usually remux the existing streams without changing their quality:

ffmpeg -i input.TOD -map 0 -c copy -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 output.M2TS

Replace input.TOD with the source filename. The -map 0 option keeps all detected streams, and -c copy copies them without generation loss. If the TOD contains extra data that causes errors, select only the main video and audio:

ffmpeg -i input.TOD -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 output.M2TS

When the target device rejects the copied streams, transcode to broadly supported Blu-ray-style codecs instead:

ffmpeg -i input.TOD -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 output.M2TS

Use -crf 18 for high visual quality; higher CRF values produce smaller files with more compression. Transcoding takes longer and cannot restore detail already lost in the TOD source.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Remuxing changes the container and packetization, not the underlying video quality, so the output should have approximately the same bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and duration as the source. Transcoding changes quality and may also alter interlacing, audio delay, or metadata.

Older TOD recordings may use interlaced MPEG-2 video. Preserve interlacing when the footage is intended for television or disc authoring; deinterlace only for a progressive playback workflow. Test the converted file with the intended player or authoring application because some programs require a complete Blu-ray or AVCHD directory structure rather than an isolated .M2TS file.

If FFmpeg reports a damaged stream, first copy the TOD file from the camera again and retain its original extension. A file that was truncated during transfer cannot be repaired reliably by changing its container.
