JVC Everio camcorder recordings saved as TOD may not play in software or on devices that expect DivX video. Converting them produces a more widely supported MPEG-4 Part 2 file for playback, sharing, or storage.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a video file format used by several JVC Everio high-definition camcorders. It normally contains MPEG-2 video and compressed audio in a transport-stream-based recording, often at 720p or 1080i resolution. JVC camcorders may also create matching .MOI files containing recording metadata; the MOI file is not the video and is not required for conversion.

TOD files are commonly encountered after copying recordings directly from an Everio camera or its memory card. Some media players can open them after detecting the MPEG-2 stream, while older editing applications may require the footage to be converted first. JVC transfer utilities and video editors supplied with Everio cameras can also be associated with these recordings.

What the DIVX format is

DivX is an MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec used for compressed video distribution. DivX video is commonly stored in an AVI container with a .avi extension, although files using .divx can use the DivX Media Format container.

Compared with the MPEG-2 video usually found in TOD recordings, DivX can provide a smaller file at a similar visual quality and is supported by many older DVD players, media players, and televisions. Compatibility depends on the device's supported resolution, frame rate, audio codec, and DivX profile.

How to actually convert TOD to DIVX

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. It reads the MPEG-2 stream in a TOD file and can encode DivX-compatible MPEG-4 video with MP3 audio.

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build that includes the libxvid and libmp3lame encoders.
  2. Put the TOD file in a working folder and open a terminal or Command Prompt there.
  3. Run:
    ffmpeg -i input.TOD -c:v libxvid -vtag DIVX -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k -f avi output.divx
  4. Test output.divx in the target player. If it expects a conventional AVI extension, use output.avi instead; the video remains DivX-compatible.

The -q:v 3 setting uses quality-based encoding; lower values generally produce higher quality and larger files. To make a smaller file with a predictable bitrate, replace it with a bitrate such as -b:v 2000k. If the source is visibly interlaced, add the deinterlacing filter before encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.TOD -vf yadif -c:v libxvid -vtag DIVX -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k -f avi output.divx

If the FFmpeg build lacks Xvid, use its MPEG-4 Part 2 encoder and set the DivX-compatible FourCC:

ffmpeg -i input.TOD -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DIVX -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k -f avi output.divx

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion from MPEG-2 to DivX is lossy, so the output cannot restore detail already absent from the TOD source. Avoid enlarging the original frame size, and keep the source frame rate unless the playback device requires a different one.

Many older DivX devices accept AVI, MPEG-4 Part 2 video, MP3 audio, and standard-definition resolutions but may reject 1080p, unusual frame rates, AC-3 audio, or DivX Media Format features. If a device fails to open a .divx file, create .avi output with the same command and check its documented DivX profile limits.
