A JVC Everio camcorder may save video as TOD, while older editors, DVD-authoring tools, and media players commonly expect MPG. Converting changes the transport-stream recording into an MPEG program stream that is easier to open, edit, archive, or share.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a video container used mainly by JVC Everio high-definition camcorders. It normally contains MPEG-2 video and camcorder audio in an MPEG transport stream, with recording metadata often stored separately in an accompanying .MOI file. TOD files are most common when transferring recordings directly from an Everio camera or its storage media.

What the MPG format is

MPG, also written MPEG, usually refers to an MPEG program stream containing MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video and compatible audio. It is supported by older video editors, DVD tools, televisions, set-top players, and general-purpose media software. MPG can be more widely compatible than TOD, but it does not automatically reduce file size; re-encoding determines the final size and quality.

How to convert TOD to MPG

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable when you need a repeatable desktop conversion and control over codecs, resolution, and audio. Install FFmpeg, place the source file in an accessible folder, then open a terminal in that folder.

For broad compatibility, convert the video to MPEG-2 and the audio to MPEG-1 Layer II:

ffmpeg -i "input.TOD" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -ar 48000 -f mpeg "output.mpg"

Replace input.TOD with the actual filename. The -q:v 2 setting gives high MPEG-2 quality; use a larger value for a smaller file and more visible compression. The command keeps the source frame size and frame rate unless you add scaling or frame-rate options.

If the source codecs are already accepted by your target software, try a faster remux without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i "input.TOD" -map 0 -c copy -f mpeg "output.mpg"

Remuxing preserves the original compressed quality, but some players reject the resulting MPG if the TOD contains an unsupported audio stream or transport-stream feature. Use the re-encoding command when compatibility matters more than conversion speed.

Using the website converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the TOD file, select MPG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Keep the original TOD and its .MOI file until you have checked the converted video.

Quality and compatibility considerations

TOD recordings are commonly interlaced, so avoid deinterlacing during conversion if the MPG will be used for DVD or interlaced television playback. For computer or web playback, deinterlace deliberately with a filter such as -vf yadif; otherwise motion may show comb-like lines.

Re-encoding MPEG-2 video introduces a second generation of compression. Remux first when the target application accepts the existing streams; re-encode only when the MPG must meet a specific codec or audio requirement. Converting the container does not restore detail already lost in the TOD recording.
