JVC Everio camcorders save high-definition MPEG-2 video as TOD, while some DVRs and set-top boxes expect the same transport-stream family with a TRP extension. Converting the container, or transcoding when the target device has stricter codec requirements, makes the recording usable in that equipment or software.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a video container used mainly by JVC Everio hard-disk camcorders, including models such as the GZ-HD7 and GZ-HD30. It normally carries high-definition MPEG-2 video in a transport-stream structure and may contain MPEG or AC-3 audio. You usually encounter .tod files after copying recordings from an Everio camera; related camera workflows may also produce companion files such as .mod or .moi.

What the TRP format is

TRP is a filename extension commonly used for MPEG-2 transport-stream video recorded or exported by digital video recorders, satellite receivers, cable boxes, and other set-top devices. A TRP file can contain multiple streams, timestamps, and broadcast-style packet data, but the extension does not define one universal codec or device specification.

TRP is useful when the receiving recorder or playback application specifically recognizes .trp. Its transport-stream structure supports long recordings and multiplexed audio/video streams, but compatibility depends on the target device's accepted video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, and packet format.

How to convert TOD to TRP

For a no-install conversion, use the free converter on 101convert.com, select the TOD file as the source and TRP as the output, then download the converted file. Check the resulting file on the intended DVR or player because TRP implementations differ between manufacturers.

For local processing, FFmpeg can usually remux a TOD recording without re-encoding:

  1. Install FFmpeg and place the source file in a working folder.
  2. Run ffmpeg -i input.TOD -map 0 -c copy output.TRP.
  3. Open output.TRP in the target application or copy it to the receiving device according to that device's file-transfer procedure.

The -c copy option preserves the original MPEG-2 video and audio, so it is fast and avoids generational quality loss. If FFmpeg cannot identify the TOD streams, try specifying the transport-stream demuxer:

ffmpeg -f mpegts -i input.TOD -map 0 -c copy output.TRP

If the target device rejects the remuxed file because it requires particular codecs or stream parameters, transcode instead:

ffmpeg -i input.TOD -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k output.TRP

This command creates MPEG-2 video with AC-3 audio inside a transport stream. Adjust the audio codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio to the target device's documented specifications; transcoding takes longer and can reduce quality.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Changing .TOD to .TRP by renaming the extension does not convert the file and may only work when the receiving software already accepts the underlying transport stream. Remuxing with -c copy retains the original quality but may preserve camera-specific stream characteristics that a DVR cannot parse.

Before converting a large recording, test a short sample. Verify audio synchronization, interlacing, aspect ratio, timestamps, and seeking, because some receivers require fixed MPEG-2 profiles, specific audio formats, or device-generated metadata that a general-purpose converter cannot reproduce.
