Free online EVO to TRP converter

Conversion is useful when a DVR, set-top box, or video editor accepts TRP transport streams but cannot open an HD DVD EVO file. TRP output can also simplify playback on devices that expect MPEG transport-stream video.

What the EVO format is

EVO is an HD DVD video container used for high-definition movies and authored disc content. It commonly contains MPEG-2 or VC-1 video, AC-3 or DTS audio, subtitles, and navigation-related streams. You may encounter EVO files after extracting content from an HD DVD or working with files created by HD DVD authoring software.

What the TRP format is

TRP is a transport-stream video container used frequently by DVRs, PVRs, satellite receivers, and some media players. It generally carries MPEG-2 or H.264 video with AAC, AC-3, or MPEG audio. Its device-oriented transport structure can be more compatible with recording hardware than the HD DVD-specific EVO container, but the .trp extension does not define one universal codec profile.

How to convert EVO to TRP

With FFmpeg, first try stream copying so the audio and video remain unchanged:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.trp

This is a remux rather than a quality-changing encode. If the target device rejects the result, create a more conventional MPEG-2 transport stream:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 8000k -c:a ac3 -b:a 384k -f mpegts output.trp

Replace input.evo with the actual filename. Use a higher or lower -b:v value to match the target device's bitrate limit. If the EVO contains several audio tracks, choose another track with -map 0:a:1 or omit explicit mapping to retain all compatible streams.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Stream copying preserves the original quality, but it may fail on devices that require a specific video codec, resolution, frame rate, audio codec, or packet arrangement. Transcoding to MPEG-2 video and AC-3 audio improves compatibility but causes generation loss and can substantially increase or decrease the file size.

Encrypted or incomplete EVO files cannot be converted reliably until the source has been decrypted and fully extracted. Menus, HD DVD navigation, chapter behavior, and disc interactivity are not preserved in a standalone TRP file; only selected media streams are carried over. Check the destination device's specification before choosing codecs and bitrate.
