An EVO file may contain HD DVD video that modern phones and lightweight editors cannot open directly. Converting it to 3GP produces a smaller, mobile-oriented file for older phones, basic playback software, or low-bandwidth sharing.

What the EVO format is

EVO is the HD DVD Enhanced VOB container used in the HVDVD_TS directory of HD DVD discs and disc backups. It usually contains MPEG-2 video with AC-3 or DTS audio, subtitles, and HD DVD navigation-related data. HD DVD authoring applications and disc-copying tools create or preserve EVO files; you may encounter them when extracting video from an HD DVD archive.

An EVO file can be much larger and higher-resolution than the video formats supported by older mobile devices. Commercial discs may also contain encryption or other protection that prevents direct decoding.

What the 3GP format is

3GP is an ISO Base Media File Format container designed for 3G mobile networks and phones. It commonly stores MPEG-4 Part 2, H.263, or H.264 video with AAC or AMR audio.

Its lower bitrate and reduced resolution make 3GP files smaller than HD video, which suits older phones, embedded players, and limited storage. Compatibility depends on the phone: newer devices may accept H.264/AAC 3GP, while older models often require MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 with AMR-NB audio.

How to convert EVO to 3GP

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the video converter on 101convert.com; it can be used free without installing software.
  2. Choose the EVO file and select 3GP as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting file when processing finishes.
  4. Test the 3GP file on the intended phone or player, because supported codecs and maximum resolution vary by model.

Using FFmpeg on a computer

FFmpeg can read many unencrypted EVO files because their video and audio streams are based on MPEG formats. Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the directory containing input.evo, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 5 -vf scale=320:-2 -c:a aac -b:a 64k -ar 44100 -ac 2 output.3gp

This creates a broadly compatible 3GP with MPEG-4 Part 2 video, a maximum width of 320 pixels, and AAC audio. Replace 320:-2 with a device-supported size such as 176:144 or 352:288.

For phones that require H.264 rather than MPEG-4 Part 2, use:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -profile:v baseline -level 3.0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -vf scale=320:-2 -c:a aac -b:a 64k -ar 44100 -ac 2 output.3gp

If FFmpeg reports that it cannot determine the EVO input format, try opening the file with a media player that supports MPEG-2 program streams or extract the main video stream first. An encrypted commercial EVO generally requires authorized decryption before conversion; changing the filename extension does not remove encryption.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Converting HD MPEG-2 video to a low-resolution 3GP requires re-encoding, so some detail and audio quality will be lost. Lowering the frame rate and resolution reduces file size but can cause judder or blurred text; preserve the source frame rate when the target device supports it.

Some 3GP players reject stereo AAC, high resolutions, or H.264 even though those combinations are valid in the container. For very old phones, select MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 video with AMR-NB audio and use the handset's documented maximum dimensions. FFmpeg builds may not include an AMR encoder, so AMR output is not available in every installation.
