JVC Everio camcorders create TOD recordings, while some HDV-oriented editors and playback devices expect the same MPEG-2 transport stream under an .m2t filename. Converting or remuxing the file makes the recording easier to import without unnecessarily re-encoding the video.
What the TOD format is
TOD is a video container used mainly by JVC Everio high-definition camcorders. It stores MPEG-2 video and camera-recorded audio in a transport stream, commonly at 1440×1080 resolution with interlaced scanning. You typically encounter .tod files copied from an Everio camcorder, often alongside playlist or metadata files.
The extension identifies the camcorder’s recording workflow rather than a completely different video codec. Some applications recognize the MPEG-2 transport stream internally but reject the .tod extension.
What the M2T format is
M2T is a filename extension commonly used for MPEG-2 transport stream video, especially HDV recordings and other high-definition MPEG-2 camera files. It is suitable for editing applications, capture tools, and hardware that identify transport-stream video by the .m2t extension.
TOD and M2T can contain substantially similar MPEG-2 transport-stream data. For compatible files, changing the stream’s presentation from TOD to M2T requires a container remux or even only a filename change; it does not require changing the encoded picture.
How to convert TOD to M2T
Using FFmpeg without re-encoding
FFmpeg can inspect and remux the recording while preserving its original video and audio:
ffmpeg -i input.tod -map 0 -c copy output.m2t
- Install FFmpeg and place
input.todin a writable folder. - Run the command from that folder.
- Open
output.m2tin the target editor or player and check the beginning, middle, and end of the recording.
The -c copy option copies the existing streams, so the operation is fast and does not introduce generation loss. -map 0 retains all streams that FFmpeg can read; use -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 instead if the receiving application rejects additional streams.
Using a graphical video application
In a desktop application that supports MPEG-2 transport streams, import input.tod, then choose File → Export or File → Remux and select MPEG-2 transport stream as the output container. Enter output.m2t as the output filename. Select stream copy or passthrough when offered; do not select H.264, HEVC, or another re-encoding preset if preserving the original MPEG-2 video is required.
Converting online
You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the TOD file, choose M2T as the output format, run the conversion, and download the resulting file. Uploading is unsuitable for confidential recordings or very large camera files unless the service’s storage and privacy terms meet your requirements.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
A successful remux preserves the original resolution, frame rate, interlacing, bitrate, and compression artifacts; it cannot improve footage already encoded by the camcorder. If the target program still refuses the M2T file, the problem may be an unsupported MPEG-2 profile, audio stream, interlacing mode, or transport-stream metadata rather than the filename.
Test the output before deleting the TOD source. If stream copying produces errors or an unusable file, inspect it with ffprobe input.tod and use a compatible MPEG-2 transport-stream encoding preset instead of copying. Re-encoding can improve application compatibility but reduces quality and takes substantially longer.
