.m2t file rather than a Windows Media Center recording. Converting the recording makes its video and audio usable outside the Windows Media Center ecosystem, although protected recordings may not be convertible.
What the WTV format is
WTV is the Windows Recorded TV container used by Windows Media Center in Windows Vista and Windows 7. Media Center creates WTV files when recording digital television, cable, or satellite broadcasts through a compatible TV tuner.
A WTV file is a container, not a single fixed video codec. Recordings commonly contain MPEG-2 video with MPEG audio or AC-3 audio; some systems also create WTV files containing H.264 video. The file can include broadcast metadata, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and copy-protection data.
What the M2T format is
M2T is commonly used for an MPEG-2 transport stream, particularly files produced by HDV camcorders and HDV capture software. It stores packetized video and audio in a stream designed for transmission and continuous playback rather than desktop file storage.
M2T is useful when an editor, capture application, or hardware device specifically expects an MPEG-2 transport stream. It is also easier to process with transport-stream tools than a WTV recording. The .m2t extension does not guarantee one exact resolution, bitrate, audio codec, or HDV profile, so the receiving application determines which M2T variants are acceptable.
How to convert WTV to M2T
Using FFmpeg on a computer
FFmpeg can read WTV and write an MPEG-2 transport stream. First check whether the recording can be decoded:
ffmpeg -i recording.wtv
If the source codecs are already accepted by the target application, try a stream copy. This avoids re-encoding and preserves the original quality:
ffmpeg -i recording.wtv -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts recording.m2t
Stream copying works only when the codecs and stream layout are compatible with the application that will open the M2T file. For a broadly compatible MPEG-2 transport stream, transcode the video and audio:
ffmpeg -i recording.wtv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts recording.m2t
The -q:v 2 setting gives high-quality variable-bitrate MPEG-2 video, but the conversion is lossy and can take substantially longer than stream copying. Change -b:a 192k if the target device requires another audio bitrate. If the receiving editor specifically requires HDV, use its documented frame size, frame rate, bitrate, and audio requirements instead of relying on generic MPEG-2 settings.
On Windows, install FFmpeg, open Command Prompt in the folder containing the recording, and replace recording.wtv with the actual filename. For a no-install conversion, you can convert the file for free on 101convert.com.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- Use stream copying whenever the target supports the source codecs; transcoding MPEG-2 video introduces another generation of compression.
- Check the output with
ffprobe recording.m2tor a media player before importing it. A file can have the correct extension while containing codecs an editor does not support. - Some WTV recordings are copy-protected. FFmpeg and ordinary converters cannot legally or technically remove that protection; an encrypted recording may fail to open or may produce unusable output.
- WTV files may contain several audio tracks or subtitle streams. The transcoding command above selects the first video and first audio stream; use additional
-mapoptions when a different language or track is required. - M2T files are often larger than compressed delivery formats because MPEG-2 uses relatively high bitrates. Converting containers does not reduce size unless the video is re-encoded with a lower bitrate or a newer codec.
