Free online DAV to TRP converter

Security-camera recordings saved as DAV often cannot be opened by general video editors or playback devices. Converting the footage to TRP creates an MPEG transport stream that may be accepted by compatible DVRs, televisions, and broadcast-video tools.

What the DAV format is

DAV is a proprietary video container used mainly by digital video recorders and IP-camera systems, especially equipment from Dahua and related OEM vendors. Recorders typically save surveillance footage with the .dav extension when continuous recording, motion detection, or an exported incident clip is copied from the device.

DAV files may contain H.264 or H.265 video, audio, timestamps, and other recorder metadata. The container and, on some devices, the video stream are not fully standardized, so ordinary players such as VLC or FFmpeg may fail to open a file that the manufacturer’s software can play. Dahua Smart Player and the export or conversion utility supplied with the recorder are the safest tools for reading the original file.

What the TRP format is

TRP is commonly an MPEG transport stream saved with a .trp extension. It stores packetized video and audio for reliable transmission and can contain MPEG-2 Video, H.264, H.265, AAC, MP2, or other streams, depending on the target device.

TRP is useful when a television, set-top box, DVR, or video application specifically expects a transport stream. The extension alone does not define the codecs or the required resolution, frame rate, audio format, or transport-stream parameters; a device may accept only a particular combination.

How to actually convert DAV to TRP

Method 1: Export the DAV with the recorder software, then create TRP

1. Open the DAV file in the recorder’s supplied player, such as Dahua Smart Player.
2. Use Convert, Export, or the equivalent menu and save an intermediate .avi or .mp4 file. If the utility offers a choice, retain the original frame rate and resolution.
3. Inspect the exported file with ffprobe exported.mp4 or play it before converting. This confirms that the export contains the required video and audio.
4. For a compatible H.264 or H.265 source, remux it into an MPEG transport stream without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i exported.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpegts output.trp

Remuxing preserves the decoded quality and is fast, but it works only when the target device supports the source codecs. If the device requires MPEG-2 video and MP2 audio, transcode instead:

ffmpeg -i exported.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp

Replace exported.mp4 with the actual exported filename. FFmpeg writes the MPEG transport stream because of -f mpegts; changing only the filename extension does not perform a conversion.

Method 2: Use the built-in online converter

You can use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the DAV file, select TRP as the output when both formats are available, start the conversion, and download the result. Proprietary or encrypted DAV files may be rejected; in that case, export the recording with the manufacturer’s player first and convert the exported video.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A DAV-to-TRP conversion cannot recover detail that was already compressed by the camera. The manufacturer export may also omit recorder-specific metadata, event indexes, watermarks, or authentication data; preserve the original DAV file when evidentiary or archival requirements apply.

Use remuxing with -c copy when the target accepts the existing codecs. Transcoding is required when it does not, and it can reduce quality while increasing file size or changing timestamps. Check the resulting stream with ffprobe output.trp and test it on the exact DVR or player that will use it, because some devices require MPEG-2 transport streams, fixed frame rates, specific audio codecs, or particular program identifiers.
