A DVR, set-top box, or media player may require a TRP transport-stream file even though the source video is stored as RMVB. The conversion normally requires transcoding because RMVB uses RealMedia codecs that are not directly compatible with most TRP playback hardware.

What the RMVB format is

RMVB means RealMedia Variable Bitrate. It is a RealNetworks container designed to store RealVideo and RealAudio streams while allocating more bitrate to complex scenes and less to simple ones.

RealNetworks software such as RealPlayer and RealProducer created many RMVB files. The format is common in older video archives, downloaded television episodes, and files distributed when RealMedia playback was widespread. Modern players may open some RMVB variants, but support for older RealVideo and RealAudio codecs is inconsistent.

What the TRP format is

TRP usually contains an MPEG transport stream, the same general container family used for digital television broadcasts. DVRs, PVRs, satellite receivers, set-top boxes, and some surveillance systems create files with the .trp extension.

A TRP file can contain MPEG-2 or H.264 video and audio such as MPEG audio, AAC, or AC-3. Transport streams split data into fixed-size packets, allowing multiple programs, timestamps, and error handling suitable for broadcast recording. The .trp extension alone does not identify the required video codec, audio codec, resolution, or bitrate; those requirements depend on the target device.

How to actually convert RMVB to TRP

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a current FFmpeg build, place the source file in an accessible folder, and inspect its streams with:

ffprobe input.rmvb

For broad compatibility with older DVRs, transcode to MPEG-2 video and MPEG audio inside an MPEG transport stream:

ffmpeg -i input.rmvb -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp

The -f mpegts option creates the transport-stream container; naming the output .trp makes it usable by software that expects that extension. The MPEG-2/MP2 combination is a practical starting point, but a particular DVR may require H.264 video and AAC or AC-3 audio instead.

If the device documentation specifies H.264/AAC, use:

ffmpeg -i input.rmvb -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 160k -f mpegts output.trp

Adjust the video settings to the recorder's limits when necessary. For example, a device that accepts only 1280×720 at 25 frames per second can be given -vf scale=1280:720,fps=25. Use -aspect 16:9 only when the source metadata is wrong; changing aspect metadata does not resize the picture.

Using the built-in online converter

101convert.com can convert the file online for free without installing software. Upload the RMVB file, choose TRP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Large or private recordings may be better handled locally because uploading requires transferring the complete source video to the service.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

RMVB-to-TRP conversion usually involves re-encoding, not a lossless container change. The source's existing compression limits the result; increasing the output bitrate cannot restore detail already removed from the RMVB file.

Use the target recorder or player's specification rather than the extension as the compatibility test. Some devices accept only transport streams recorded with a particular codec, frame size, frame rate, audio format, or program structure. If a generated file is rejected, inspect a sample TRP produced by the device with ffprobe sample.trp and match its video and audio parameters.

FFmpeg builds differ in RealMedia support. If FFmpeg reports that the RMVB codec or audio stream is unsupported, use a build containing the relevant RealVideo and RealAudio decoders or convert the file with software that can play that specific RMVB variant before creating the TRP output.
