IFV files are often produced by older video software or proprietary recording systems, while TRP is used by some HDTV recorders, DVRs, and set-top boxes. Conversion is needed when a TRP-compatible player or device cannot open the original IFV recording.

What the IFV format is

IFV commonly refers to Indeo Video Format, an older video format associated with Intel Indeo codecs and legacy Windows multimedia applications. You may encounter it in archived computer video, old capture software, or exports from equipment that uses IFV as a proprietary recording extension.

The extension is not fully standardized across all video products. If the file came from a CCTV or DVR system, its encoding may require the manufacturer's player rather than a general-purpose media application.

What the TRP format is

TRP is a video file containing an MPEG transport stream, commonly used for recordings made by HDTV receivers, PVRs, DVRs, and set-top boxes. It can contain video, audio, program information, and timing data in a stream-oriented container.

TRP files are handled by applications such as VLC and FFmpeg, although the supported video and audio codecs depend on the receiving device. The format is useful when a device expects a transport stream rather than a general-purpose container such as MP4.

How to convert IFV to TRP

FFmpeg is the most practical desktop option when the IFV file uses a codec that FFmpeg can decode.

  1. Install FFmpeg and check whether the file is readable with ffprobe input.ifv.
  2. Convert the video and audio to an MPEG transport stream with:

ffmpeg -i "input.ifv" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts "output.trp"

The mpeg2video and mp2 settings produce a broadly compatible transport stream. The -q:v 2 setting prioritizes high video quality; use a larger value such as 4 or 5 to reduce the output size.

For a no-install option, you can convert the file for free on 101convert.com. Upload the IFV file, select TRP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. A proprietary IFV file may be rejected if the site's decoder does not support its specific video system.

If FFmpeg reports Invalid data found when processing input, open the recording in the vendor's IFV player and export it to AVI or another standard format first. Then convert that intermediate file with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i "exported.avi" -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts "output.trp"

Quality and compatibility limitations

Re-encoding an IFV file reduces quality and can remove proprietary timestamps, camera metadata, menus, subtitles, or multiple recorded channels. Renaming .ifv to .trp does not convert the container or codec.

Some DVR-generated IFV files contain encrypted data, vendor-specific indexes, or incomplete stream headers. Such files may play only in the original recorder software and cannot be converted reliably without first exporting them through that software. Test the resulting TRP file on the target device, because some devices accept only MPEG-2 video with MPEG audio while others require H.264 or a particular transport-stream structure.
