IFV recordings usually come from proprietary CCTV or DVR systems, while MTS is accepted by AVCHD-compatible video editors and players. Convert the footage when an editor or playback device cannot open the surveillance recorder’s native file.

What the IFV format is

In the Video category, IFV generally identifies a proprietary surveillance-video file produced by a DVR, NVR, or security-camera application. The exact codec, audio format, timestamp data, and file structure depend on the recorder manufacturer, so an IFV file may open only in the vendor’s playback or evidence-export software. You may encounter it after copying recordings from a surveillance system or receiving archived camera footage.

Because IFV is not a single, consistently documented codec, general-purpose converters may fail to decode it. The recorder’s own player is usually the safest way to export it to MP4, AVI, or another standard intermediate file.

What the MTS format is

MTS is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream file commonly used by AVCHD camcorders and Blu-ray-compatible workflows. It normally contains H.264/AVC video and AC-3 or LPCM audio, with support for high-definition video, interlacing, and transport-stream error resilience.

Choose MTS when the destination software expects AVCHD-style transport streams or when you need to preserve a camera-oriented HD video structure. MTS does not preserve proprietary DVR features such as searchable event indexes, camera metadata, or cryptographic evidence signatures.

How to convert IFV to MTS

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the IFV-to-MTS converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the IFV file and select MTS as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting file when processing finishes.
  4. Play the MTS file and check the entire duration, audio, aspect ratio, and timestamp overlay before deleting the source.

This method works only when the converter can recognize the particular IFV variant. If the upload is rejected or produces a file without usable video, export the recording with the CCTV system’s playback software first.

Exporting through the recorder’s software, then using FFmpeg

  1. Open the IFV in the manufacturer-supplied DVR/NVR player.
  2. Use Export, Save as, or Evidence export and select MP4 or AVI. Select the original resolution and frame rate when those options are available.
  3. Convert the exported file with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i exported.mp4 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -profile:v high -c:a ac3 -b:a 256k -f mpegts output.mts

Replace exported.mp4 with the actual intermediate filename. The command re-encodes the video as H.264, converts audio to AC-3, and writes an MPEG transport stream with an .mts extension. If the source has no audio, use -an instead of the audio options.

Quality and compatibility limitations

There is normally at least one lossy generation when an IFV recording is exported and encoded as MTS. Keep the original IFV and the vendor-exported file for evidence or archival use; treat MTS as a compatibility copy.

Changing the filename extension alone does not convert the container. An MTS file may still be rejected if its H.264 profile, frame rate, resolution, audio codec, or interlacing does not match the receiving application. FFmpeg’s output is a valid MPEG transport stream, but it may not include the complete AVCHD folder structure expected by some camcorders, Blu-ray authoring tools, or hardware players.

Surveillance timestamp overlays that are visibly rendered into the exported picture remain part of the video, but hidden recorder metadata, motion-search indexes, multiple camera channels, and authentication information generally do not survive a standard MTS export.
