IFV files are often legacy Indeo video files that modern editors and players no longer accept. Converting them to M2V produces an MPEG-2 elementary video stream for DVD authoring, broadcast workflows, or software that specifically requires M2V.
What the IFV format is
In video contexts, IFV usually refers to a video file encoded with Intel Indeo, a legacy codec used by older Windows multimedia, capture, and editing software. IFV files are most likely to appear in archives from the 1990s and early 2000s, although some vendor applications use the extension for proprietary video exports.
The .ifv extension does not guarantee one standardized container. Use ffprobe input.ifv or MediaInfo to identify the codec, dimensions, frame rate, and whether the file contains audio before converting it.
What the M2V format is
M2V is an MPEG-2 elementary video stream. It is used by DVD-authoring applications, some broadcast systems, and MPEG-2 production workflows because the video stream is stored without a surrounding audio-video container.
An M2V file contains video only. Any audio in the IFV source is omitted during a direct conversion and must be exported separately, commonly as .mp2 or .ac3, when preparing DVD or broadcast media.
How to actually convert IFV to M2V
FFmpeg is the most practical desktop option when it can decode the particular IFV variant:
- Install a current FFmpeg build and place the source file in an accessible folder.
- Inspect the source with
ffprobe input.ifv. Confirm that FFmpeg reports a video stream rather than an unsupported or encrypted file. - Run
ffmpeg -i input.ifv -map 0:v:0 -an -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -f mpeg2video output.m2v. - Open
output.m2vin the target DVD-authoring or editing application and verify the frame size, frame rate, and playback.
The -an option removes audio because M2V cannot contain it; -q:v 2 requests high MPEG-2 quality, but the output can be large. For a fixed production bitrate, replace it with settings such as -b:v 6000k -maxrate 8000k -bufsize 1835k.
You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the IFV file, select M2V as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. If the service or FFmpeg cannot decode the file, open it in the original IFV-producing application and use File → Export or Save as to create an intermediate AVI, then convert that file with FFmpeg.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Conversion cannot restore detail lost by the original Indeo compression. Re-encoding to MPEG-2 introduces another lossy generation, so use the highest-quality readable source and avoid repeated conversions.
M2V compatibility depends on MPEG-2 parameters. DVD workflows commonly require 720×480 at 29.97 fps for NTSC or 720×576 at 25 fps for PAL, plus compliant bitrate and audio files supplied separately. An M2V created with arbitrary dimensions or frame rates may play in a media player but fail in DVD-authoring software.
If the IFV file is a proprietary DVR export, it may require the manufacturer’s player or codec before conversion; changing the extension to .m2v does not convert the data.
