.m2v video stream, usually without audio, so any accompanying sound must be handled separately.
What the H.265 format is
H.265, also called HEVC, is a video compression codec designed to deliver similar visual quality to H.264 at a lower bitrate. Phones, action cameras, screen recorders, streaming services, Blu-ray workflows, and recent editing applications commonly create H.265 video.
H.265 video is normally stored inside a container such as .mp4, .mov, or .mkv; the filename extension identifies the container, not necessarily the codec. You can verify the codec and stream properties with FFmpeg's ffprobe input.mp4 command.
What the M2V format is
M2V is an MPEG-2 video elementary stream, usually identified by the .m2v extension. It contains compressed video frames but normally has no audio, subtitles, chapter data, or general-purpose container metadata.
M2V is used by DVD-authoring software, some broadcast and legacy editing systems, and workflows that need a separate MPEG-2 video stream. Its compatibility with older hardware is an advantage, but MPEG-2 requires substantially more bitrate than H.265 for comparable quality.
How to actually convert H265 to M2V
FFmpeg provides the most controllable desktop conversion. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and run:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -an -f mpeg2video output.m2v
This selects the first video stream, decodes H.265, encodes MPEG-2 video, discards audio with -an, and writes a raw M2V stream. Replace input.mp4 with the actual H.265-containing filename; the input can also be .mov or .mkv.
For a predictable bitrate, use an explicit MPEG-2 rate instead of quality-based -q:v:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 8000k -maxrate 9000k -bufsize 1835k -an -f mpeg2video output.m2v
Use a bitrate appropriate to the destination system. DVD-compatible video commonly uses MPEG-2 with a maximum video bitrate near 9.8 Mb/s, but the authoring application may impose its own resolution, frame-rate, GOP, and bitrate limits.
To convert without installing software, use the free converter on 101convert.com, choose the H.265 source and M2V as the output, then download the generated file. Check the result in the target editor or authoring application because online conversion settings may not expose DVD-specific controls.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
The conversion is a lossy re-encode: H.265 frames are decoded and then compressed again as MPEG-2. Increasing the MPEG-2 bitrate reduces additional loss but cannot restore detail already discarded by the source.
M2V normally contains no audio. If the destination requires a separate audio file, extract or convert the source audio independently, for example:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:a:0 -c:a pcm_s16le audio.wav
DVD production may require MPEG-2 video at specific standard-definition dimensions and frame rates, such as 720×480 at 29.97 fps for NTSC or 720×576 at 25 fps for PAL. A generic M2V conversion does not automatically make nonstandard source video DVD-compliant; configure scaling, frame-rate conversion, interlacing, and bitrate for the target specification.
Use -vf scale=720:480,fps=30000/1001 or an equivalent destination-specific filter only when the required standard differs from the source. Scaling and frame-rate conversion can introduce softness or motion artifacts, so preserve the original dimensions and frame rate when the receiving software accepts them.
