A DVD player or DVD-authoring application may require MPEG-2 VOB files instead of H.265 video. Converting is also useful when an older editor cannot decode HEVC or when creating a video DVD with menus and chapters.

What the H.265 format is

H.265, also called HEVC, is a video codec designed to deliver similar visual quality to H.264 at a lower bitrate. Phones, action cameras, screen recorders, streaming tools, HandBrake, FFmpeg, and modern editing applications commonly create H.265 video.

H.265 video may appear as a raw .h265 or .hevc stream, or inside an .mp4, .mkv, or similar container. The container stores audio, subtitles, and metadata; H.265 is only the video coding method. Many DVD players and older editing programs do not decode it.

What the VOB format is

VOB, or Video Object, is the media container used by DVD-Video discs. It normally contains MPEG-2 video, DVD-compatible audio such as AC-3, MPEG-1 Layer II, or uncompressed PCM, plus navigation-related data.

VOB is suitable for DVD players and DVD-authoring workflows. A playable DVD normally also requires matching .IFO navigation files and .BUP backup files inside a VIDEO_TS folder; changing a file extension to .vob does not create those files.

How to convert H.265 to VOB

Using FFmpeg for a standalone VOB

  1. Install FFmpeg and confirm that it can read the source with ffmpeg -i input.h265. Use the actual container filename if the video is in an MP4 or MKV file.
  2. For an NTSC DVD, run ffmpeg -i input.h265 -target ntsc-dvd output.vob.
  3. For a PAL DVD, run ffmpeg -i input.h265 -target pal-dvd output.vob.
  4. Use -aspect 16:9 or -aspect 4:3 when the source aspect ratio is not detected correctly, for example ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -target pal-dvd -aspect 16:9 output.vob.

FFmpeg decodes the H.265 stream and re-encodes it as DVD-compatible MPEG-2. The resulting VOB can be opened by some players and editors, but it is not by itself a complete authored DVD.

Creating a playable DVD

  1. Convert the source with FFmpeg, or import the H.265 file directly into a DVD-authoring program that supports HEVC decoding.
  2. Open DVDStyler or another desktop DVD-authoring application, create a PAL or NTSC project matching the target player, and add the video.
  3. Set the disc aspect ratio, menu, chapters, and audio options, then use the program's DVD creation or ISO output function.
  4. Burn the generated ISO or VIDEO_TS folder to DVD. Do not burn a lone VOB file if the target is a standalone DVD player.

For a one-off conversion without installing software, 101convert.com provides a free online converter; upload the source, choose VOB, start the conversion, and download the result. Privacy, upload-size, and processing limits depend on the website.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

H.265-to-VOB conversion is necessarily lossy because standard DVD-Video uses MPEG-2 rather than HEVC. A high-bitrate H.265 source cannot restore detail after the MPEG-2 encode. DVD video is limited to 720×480 at NTSC or 720×576 at PAL, with DVD-compatible frame rates and audio formats.

Choose PAL or NTSC from the destination player's requirements rather than only from the source file. Converting between frame rates can duplicate or discard frames and may cause motion judder. A typical DVD video bitrate is roughly 4–8 Mb/s; higher video bitrate reduces available disc duration, while lower bitrate increases block artifacts.

A VOB made by FFmpeg may contain valid MPEG-2 program-stream data but lack DVD menus, chapters, and navigation. Use an authoring application when those features or reliable compatibility with physical DVD players are required. Large DVD titles may be split into multiple VOB files, commonly near the 1 GiB boundary, as part of the DVD-Video structure.
